The Greatest Love
by Paul Powers
12/15/2008 / Family
Saturdays were cleaning day for Mrs. Owl! Sweep here, mop there. Telly often had to leave the comfort of his recliner because of the dust that flew all through the house! Tully often ribbed Telly about the stale smell of the Sherlock Holmes pipe that she read about back in merry old London. Just when Tully thought, she had the house to herself-there was a knock on the door, "Tap, Tap. Tap!" "Oh my, who could that be so early in the morning?" Said Tully who had hoped to get the cleaning done quickly so she could tend to her garden.
She opened the door and to her surprise were her two twin nieces, Mary and Carrie!
"Hi, Aunt Tully, schools out and we thought we would come and visit you for while-if that's okay?" Their visit was a little unexpected, but she was glad to see them and told them to come in for some tea!
"Aunt Tully, What is the Greatest Love? Mother is always talking about Jesus and the Bible, praying and going to church, but somehow it seems like a lot of work and we just do not understand what all it really means?" Tully was overjoyed to share with her precious nieces about the Greatest Love ever given to Mankind! That was the story about God sending his only son, Jesus to die on the cross for our sins!
She put her arms around the girls! Then they walked up on a little hill and sat down where it was cool. "Many years ago, God created the earth and all the creatures and made man (Adam) and his wife Eve! They lived in a beautiful Garden called Eden! Everything was perfect! God walked with Adam in the cool of the day and they had perfect fellowship. They could eat of all the trees in the garden except the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil! "Why couldn't they eat of that tree Auntie?" said Mary! "Because, if they did they would die!" Mary Gasp!
"As the story goes, there was this serpent and he tempted Eve to eat of the fruit. He told her that she would not die, but be as God, knowing both good and evil. Nevertheless, the death God was speaking of was spiritual separation from Him. Adam ate of the fruit as well and "sin" caused them to fall from their perfect place of fellowship with God! Because of that, Adam and Eve had to leave the Garden. Their sin brought a curse on all humanity! "What happen next Auntie, said Carrie?"
"Animal sacrifices were made, in order for man to be clean from his sin! A lamb without spot or wrinkle had to die!" "Yuck, you mean they killed a lamb to be forgiven by God, that's cruel!" said Mary! "Actually, the symbol of the Lamb dying was a prophecy of the Lamb of God who would come and die to take away the sin of the world-Jesus Christ!" "Mother said something about Jesus, tell us more!" said Carrie!
"A virgin would conceive a son by the Holy Spirit and they would call his name Jesus for He would save his people from their sins! Did you know that Jesus was born in a stable with animals just like us? Its true there was no room in the inn for Joseph and Mary-so they stayed in a barn. Therefore, we are much honored, to have the King of Kings be born among our kind! As Shepherds watched their flocks by night, multitudes of Angels appeared overhead, saying, "Glory to God in the Highest and on Earth, Peace, and Goodwill towards men! For unto you is born this day in the City of David, a Savior which is Christ the Lord!" The Shepherds left their flocks and found the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger!
What happened to Jesus after his birth? Both girls said at the same time. From the time of his birth, the devil was out to kill the Christ child. But Jesus came for a purpose; He was the sinless Lamb of God who came to die for the sin of the world!" At the age of 30, He began His ministry preaching the Gospel and the message that unless a man is born again, He cannot enter the Kingdom of God! (John 3:3).
Three years later, the religious leaders had Jesus arrested on false charges. He was betrayed by one of his own disciples, for thirty pieces of silver, falsely convicted, and crucified on a Roman Cross. He died forgiving those that crucified Him. However, a Glorious thing happened!
On the Third Day, Christ arose from the grave, just as the scriptures foretold! It was finished, now man can be once again be in right standing with God, "IF" they repent of their sins and accept God's Eternal sacrifice for those sins-Jesus Christ!
Mary and Carrie began crying! Deep inside, they knew that they did not know the Jesus that their Mother or Aunt knew! That afternoon on a hill similar to where Christ died; Mary and Carrie prayed and ask Jesus Christ to become their Savior-How about YOU? Do you know Jesus? Let us pray: "Father, Forgive me of my sins. Come into my heart! Be my Lord and Savior right now!" Amen!
