TO WHOM SHALL WE GO?
by Imma Okochua
10/25/2008 / Missions
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. (John 6: 68-69 KJV)
To whom shall we Go? This is the one question everyone is asking today. We need peace in this world. To whom shall we go for it? We need food, clothing, prosperity, health, education, promotions, safety, success and above all, we need LIFE. To whom shall we go for these?
Hunan beings have set up governments, schools, hospitals, industries, clubs and even religions for the purpose of meeting the needs of this world. The fact that we are always criticising, contesting, revising, amending, removing and remaking these institutions proves that we are yet to have our need of these things met.
Thus, when the Jews met Jesus, they behaved just like us today. They asked Him for manna (summing their material needs in that). Citing Moses who gave the Israelites manna in the wilderness (John 6:30-31), they claimed they needed to have manna before they would believe in Him. They were in essence telling God, "We have seen lots of people making claims on us. We won't be fooled any longer. Just meet our demands for material provisions and we would submit to you."
This might surprise us, but are we not like them? Some of us have refused to fully surrender to Jesus Christ because we don't trust Him enough to take care of all our needs. We need healing, good health, money and success and we have told God that if He gives us this or that then and only then would we serve Him.
What Jesus told the Jews is what He still tells us today: "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." (John 6: 32).
Jesus is saying that He is what you are looking for in life and more. You must believe Him first. You must eat and swallow His Words and let it save, heal or revive you. That is what He meant when He told the Jews that: "51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. 58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. (John 6:51-58)
Many were offended at His demand. Some could not even understand it. They went away, including even His disciples. They refused to submit to the Son of God because He would not first of all submit to them!
And is it not truly strange that when men asked for bread and were given the Bread that will last them forever they rejected it. Today, very many people are still not interested in the WORDS of ETERNAL LIFE. They can discuss and believe economic, legal, psychological, biological and sociological theories. They read them, digest them and assimilate them wholesale. Yet, these are things that at best give only temporary answers. But when it comes to the Word of God, they become suspicious and unbelieving. Such persons will not make any headway with God.
Thank God, for Peter and the other apostles. They sure needed physical bread and prosperity like others, but they knew that the greatest bread and prosperity is ETERNAL LIFE. When others began to go away, they stayed with Jesus, 'eating His flesh and drinking His blood'. No wonder they are now enjoying with Him in Paradise. They submitted to, and ate,the ETERNAL BREAD that gives ETERNAL LIFE. That bread is the Word of God which you must submit to unconditionally if you are to live eternally.
Are you looking for lifefor earthly life? Are you searching for food, health, material prosperity and success? Jesus offers you more than you could even ask for: He offers you ETERNAL FOOD, HEALTH, SUCCESS AND LIFE.
What you need is to humble yourself; submit to Him; accept His Word and He will save and satisfy your real longings. He will give you the satisfaction that will last you for this life and the one to come.
Pray to Him now. Tell Jesus you are accepting Him and all His Word. You are not laying any condition for Him to fulfil before you believe. You are taking Him as He is. He should give you the bread that will end your hunger and the drink that will quench all your thirst.
