DO WE NEED NATURE? essay

by Richard L. Provencher
6/23/2008 / Events

Yes. In spite of challenges Nature provides recreation, a habitat for fowl and beast, and an escape from the stress of everyday life. Industry should be allowed in areas of high unemployment with a fair percentage of net profits diverted to recreational development and outdoors preservation.

The Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world at the mercy of employment and stark living conditions from nearby cities. Creative accommodations must be constructed to discourage expansion into nearby forested habitats.

Overcrowding can be addressed by creative accommodations along with the will to phase out isolated ghettos of poverty.

A diminishing period of time exists for us to protect our wilderness areas before they collapse. Otherwise we may reach the point where clusters of grass and trees are encased in bubbles of protection, like the animals in the zoo. What a terrible legacy for our children.

If the introduction of efficiency in the growth of our foodstuffs takes place on a large scale, then it should only be with the intention of feeding the poor and not just add to the profits of wealthy multi-national corporations.

Israel and Palestine are also in a unique position to share land and resources. How wonderful if each could work on a massive one-quarter mile wide garden of flowers and produce along their mutual border. Their scientists could develop strategies to assist communities in growing their own food, genetically assisted if necessary.

The utilization of mankind's resources must help impoverished nations realize there is a future for them in the adventure of life. I believe the United Nations should be the controlling forum for proper monitoring of any new opportunities to provide ample sustenance.

Survival of the human race demands we overcome our difficulties and learn to help one another through the protection of our outdoors. Otherwise, what hope is there for our world, called "Earth."
