HAND-TOUCH-CRASH
by Richard L. Provencher
6/13/2008 / Short Stories
"CRASH!" the lamp is in lots of pieces.
Then more noise and loud yells start. Mommy is crying. And I even hear lots of screaming.
Quick! Crawl quickly! Run somewhere. Can't, too slow.
Mommy. Don't cry. I'm sorry. My eyes are really sad. Mommy, stop crying. Please.
I help mommy clean up. Why are there so many pieces?
One, two, three...like me. I'm three. There's a whole lot more numbers to learn.
I hear mommy count, "One...two...three." She does it more slowly. I know she is very patient.
Now there are no more loud noises.
And there's no more crying.
Instead, mommy makes funny noises inside her tummy. I think she is laughing.
My hand touches her hand. It is so warm.
I turn around and around, like a top. Then books begin to fall off the shelf. My cereal bowl also falls off the table. Now it feels like sand on the kitchen floor.
Like at the beach.
My food is all over. Mommy, can I help? Such a messy floor, mommy, I'm sorry.
My hands help hold the broom. It is round like a tree. So my fingers hold on really tight.
Mommy smiles at me, and I smile back.
I love my mommy.
My dress is so pretty. It feels soft. And it is warm like my kitty. Here kitty, kitty. I think she wants to hide under the table.
But, I find her.
I want to touch her white and black fur. She runs away quickly. But I am faster. Now I can scratch her back.
She is soft. And warm.
My fingers hold tight. "MEOW!" She says, "NO!" She wants to go. I let her. Is my kitty upset with me?
I love my kitty, but she runs away quickly. This time I run too slow.
My new shoes are brown, with shiny leather. They make my feet look nice.
I touch the floor. "Cold. COLD."
Mommy comes. She is still smiling. She stands up high, like a cloud. It makes my neck hurt. Mommy, I'll always love you.
I will.
Time to walk again. Then run fast. Around and around I go again. Touch TV. Watch me go.
I turn dials, and make lots of turns. No more pretty pictures. No more talking voices. It looks like snow instead of a picture.
Loud steps tell me mommy's coming again. Her THUMP! THUMP! Feet are like thunder.
I try to run really fast.
Mommy starts laughing. Then she catches me and tickles me.
It makes me fall down. My feet are up. I kick and move all over. The floor is my friend.
My hands touch the rug. Warm, like my pussycat.
Mommy tickles me some more. My face is like a giant smile.
My arms are moving. Around and around they go, like windmills.
My hands touch her arms. Then I touch her face.
She bends over and kisses my cheek.
I'm glad she's my mommy!
