Lucy Mouse Uses Good Words, A Children's Story

by Nancy Quinn
4/16/2008 / Short Stories

"What did he say?" Lucy thought as she looked at Moose Mouse when he tripped. Moose was one of Lucy's friends and they walked to school every day together. They were already at the school's steps when the bell rang, so she didn't have a chance to ask Moose why he used a bad word. Lucy knew she wasn't supposed to say swear words OR take the Lord's name in vain. She only used the Lord's name when she was talking to God (which is called praying). Lucy remembered the third commandment of the Ten Commandments she learned at Sunday school which is from Exodus 20:7 "Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse His name." Lucy Mouse loved God and she didn't want to disobey God.

After school that day, Lucy and Moose tossed a ball back and forth as they ran through the park. BLEEP, went Moose as he dropped the ball. Lucy stopped and asked Moose why he was swearing. Moose looked thoughtful for a minute, and then realized he had been hanging out with his older brother and his friends for the past couple weeks. He hadn't realized it was so easy to start using bad words when you're around people who do it a lot. Moose apologized to Lucy Mouse and said he was going to try really hard to not use swear words. When Lucy pointed out that Moose had used the Lord's name wrong that morning, Moose looked surprised. "I did?" Moose felt badly because he was memorizing the Ten Commandments in Sunday school with Lucy and remembered the third commandment too. Moose said a quick prayer and apologized to God for taking His name in vain. Then, he asked God to help him use good words every day.

As the friends sat in Sunday school the following Sunday, the lesson was about using good words. Lucy Mouse glanced over at Moose and smiled. They sat up a little straighter and listened closely to the lesson. Lucy liked the verses in the lesson. One was from Psalm 19:14 "May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." Moose noticed that verse was on their take home papers, so decided to put that by his bed and pray that every morning. He also decided to stop hanging out with his older brother and his friends as much. And he knew with God's help, he would be able to remember to use good words.

As the Sunday school teacher read the last verse of their lesson, they looked for it in their papers and found it on the back page. They especially wanted to remember that verse! Matthew 12:37 "The words you say now reflect your fate then; either you will be justified by them or you will be condemned." They hadn't realized how important it was to be so careful with their words. The teacher explained that it wasn't enough to just not say swear words or not take the Lord's name in vain; they also need to speak nicely and kindly to others. She explained that there is an old saying, "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." She told the class that it was a very easy rule to remember. We need to always speak positive and build others up with our speech. Lucy Mouse knew that Jesus would help her and Moose make good choices with their words the coming week! And Moose decided to pray for his older brother and his friends so Jesus can help them make good choices with their words too.

Did you know that the words you say every day are very important? God wants us to be kind to others and use good words. We all have choices we get to make every day, and you can choose to love Jesus and invite him into your heart. If you pray the following prayer that Lucy and Moose prayed, then Jesus will become your best friend too. Jesus promises to NEVER leave you. He loves you very much!

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
