Lucy Mouse Discovers a Fruit of the Spirit, Patience: A Children's Story
by Nancy Quinn
4/07/2008 / Short Stories
The classroom was buzzing with excitement. Today was the school field trip to the museum. As Lucy Mouse's teacher called attendance, she peeked out the window and saw the tiny bus had already parked in front of the school. Lucy Mouse put her hands on her desk and tried to sit quietly and listen to Miss Pretzel's instructions. She finally finished taking attendance and asked everyone to line up near the classroom door. The room instantly became a flurry of paws and tails as everyone grabbed their lunch bags and raced to form a line by the classroom door.
Lucy Mouse was careful not to push her way into line and waited her turn to find a good spot on the bus. Moose Mouse waved to Lucy from the back of the bus and she happily sat down next to her friend. It seemed like forever until the bus lurched slowly forward and a cheer went up. Lucy watched out the window as the bus rumbled past her little church home where she lived in the basement with her family behind the Christmas ornament boxes and into the open countryside to the next town. The bus creaked to a halt in front of the town's museum. After instructions from Miss Pretzel, everyone jumped out of their seats and lined up to get off the bus. Pushing and shoving caused Lucy and Moose to decide to sit back down and wait until the aisle of the bus was less crowded.
The museum echoed as their squeaky voices bounced off the large marble walls. The mice scampered after the museum guide and their teacher to the first room. Albert Mouse, the class bully, pushed between Moose and Lucy to see a sculpture better. Lucy grinned at Moose and they looked at the sculpture as they walked past too.
There was so much to see that the beautiful paintings and sculptures started to blur together by lunchtime for Lucy. She hoped she could remember all the details of the day's trip to tell her mom. Lucy Mouse was happy it was lunchtime so she could stop her grumbling tummy and think about which paintings were her favorites so far. Their lunches were waiting in the cafeteria for them and they went to the long table to look for their names on the bags. Albert pushed past everyone and began reaching in front of Lucy and Moose. Lucy saw Albert's lunch and handed it to him, and then Lucy and Moose picked up their lunches, chatting about the gift shop that was their next stop.
The teacher asked everyone to throw their garbage away before they went into the gift shop. Lucy and Moose waited their turn as they peeked around the line, hoping to get a glimpse of the wonderful things in the gift shop. Lucy got her turn to enter the shop and she walked slowly through the store deciding what she could get with the money her mom gave her. She found a tiny snow globe and went to stand in line. Albert was in line ahead of her, tapping his feet and craning his neck as he ordered his classmates ahead of him to hurry up. Lucy Mouse wasn't in a hurry. She knew her turn would come soon. And she had so much to tell her mom that day!
Can you find the ways patience was shown in the story? Are you always patient? Sometimes it's hard to show patience. But when you become a Christian, God will help you develop ALL the fruits of the Spirit. He gives you the Holy Spirit to help you do your best each day. If you don't know Jesus as your best friend yet, you can just pray the prayer below that Lucy Mouse and her friends prayed, and Jesus will come into your heart and be your best friend too! Jesus loves you very much. Can you hear him knocking on the door to your heart? Won't you invite Him in?
Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.
Galations 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.
May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
