Lucy Mouse Helps a Bully, A Children's Story

by Nancy Quinn
3/09/2008 / Short Stories

Lucy Mouse felt the whoosh of the Frisbee as it passed over her head and barely missed her friend Moose Mouse. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon and Lucy was having fun playing with her friends in the little park by the church where she lived with her family in the basement behind the Christmas ornament box. Moose Mouse was her new friend and sometimes bullies bothered him. Moose was a very, VERY tiny gray mouse with a tuft of hair that stood up straight on the top of his head. His voice squeaked when he talked so sometimes the bullies made fun of him at school. Lucy and Mouse saw the bullies at the other end of the park scampering to retrieve their Frisbee, so were relived that Lucy's mom decided to call them for lunch.

As the friends nibbled their cheese and sipped water out of thimble cups, Lucy wondered why others sometimes said and did mean things to hurt others. She knew the only way to have friends was to be nice and to be a good friend herself. Being mean just makes others not want to be around you. Lucy Mouse remembered a bible verse from Sunday school from Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. She tried really hard to remember that verse when someone said something mean to her and a lot of times it worked. She noticed if she got mad and said something mean back; it sometimes made the bully even madder.

Lucy and Moose finished their lunch, and put their dishes in the sink. They sat down in the living room to play a board game for the afternoon. As Lucy and Moose were starting to put their game away, they heard a scream and peeked out the window. One of the bullies was sitting on the ground holding his knee and the other boys were running away. Lucy and Moose looked at each other, and then decided to go and see if he was OK. It was Cranky the Rat. Moose asked if he was ok and he gruffly said "I'm fine." But when he tried to stand, he just fell down again, so Lucy and Moose stood on either side of him and lifted him up. Lucy said, "My mom has a first aid kit. Why don't you come to my house so she can fix your knee before you try to go all the way home?" Cranky rubbed his knee and mumbled "Ok."

Cranky sat at the kitchen table and Lucy's mom bandaged his knee while Lucy carefully carried a plate of cheese to the table. Cranky noticed the board game on the floor in the living room, and said "Hey, I used to have that game, but my little brother lost most of the pieces." Lucy set the board game up again and they all played for awhile. Cranky said he had to go home. He waved goodbye to Lucy and Moose and limped home.

Lucy and Moose put their game away, and Lucy smiled and said now she knows what the verse means that she read in the bible. Proverbs 25:21 -22 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head and the Lord will reward you. Lucy hoped that Cranky would be nice to them at school now, but even if he was still sometimes mean to them, they knew what Jesus would want them to do!

Has anyone ever said anything mean to you? Lucy Mouse hopes you remember the bible verses. They help her to be nice to bullies and they can help you too. Did you know that God loves you very much? He wants to help you too. If you ask Jesus to be your Savior and best friend by praying the below prayer, then Jesus will be in your heart and you can pray and learn lots of things in your bible like Lucy does. God wants you to talk to him, and remember that there is no prayer that is too big or too small for him!

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
