BY MYSELF, BUT NEVER ALONE: Sunday School Lesson

by linzy bruno
5/21/2024 / Short Stories

“Don’t get me wrong, I love being around people, but once they are out of our sight, we are not with them any longer….. We can’t spend time with them when they are not with us…..And now that you kids are getting older, you’re starting to experience what it’s like to be alone, and being alone can get lonely…..But, I have noticed that when I am alone and I begin to seek the Lord, I feel God’s Presence so strong that I’ve come to realize that even when I’m by myself I’m never really alone…….That’s what Mrs. Mumford was telling us this morning Mom,” Meagan exclaimed at the dinner table, one Thursday evening in early June, with her best friend Stephie right by her side; eating macaroni and cheese elbow to elbow.

“Yeah, and she was serious…..She said we all should think about that tonight so we can discuss it amongst ourselves tomorrow,” Stephie added.

“And what did you and the others think about that?” Meagan’s mom asked; looking straight into Meagan’s eyes.

“Well….I was thinking, wow that sounds really great, but Stephie here whispered in my ear, “Our teacher’s nuts,” Meagan replied.

“Yeah I said that, but I didn’t really mean it,” Stephie said; trying not to shout.

“Oh, that’s ok Stephanie, it just sounded weird to you at first that’s all, but then you understood after you’d thought about it for a while; is that what you mean Stephie?”

Stephie just smiled and nodded her head happily.

The next morning in their 9th grade religion class, Mrs. Mumford slowly paced back and forth in front of her desk; looking around at all the students for several long minutes. Then, she grabbed her longest piece of chalk and began writing on the blackboard: “By myself, but never alone.” Then, she put the chalk down and turned to face the class. “I realize this lesson may seem a little bit hard to comprehend and I want you to know that as children, no one expects you all to completely understand…

It’s just that I want you all to at least hear it now at your young age to give you an idea of how great life can be as a believer in God. Bad things happen to everyone…..no one will lead a perfect life. But when we learn God is always there, even when we are not paying Him any attention everything begins to change. And when we do call on Him, not only is He there ready to help us with our problems, which we talked about last week, He is also there to comfort us and reveal His amazing Presence to us. There is no person, other than Jesus…..no one who has ever been born, who can fill a room like He can!.....

For your homework assignment for this weekend, I want you all to read the following Bible verses with your parents and discuss them.”

Then she turned back to the blackboard and wrote the following Scripture references: Isaiah 41:10, Deuteronomy 31:8 & Psalm 16:11

Then, just before the bell rang, Mrs. Mumford reminded her class that it’s really relationship over religion that God wants with all of His children, of all ages, because we are all His children no matter how young or old we are. “Just because we call this class ‘Religious Instructions’ doesn’t mean we need a religion…..but our school is not a Christian school, so that is just the name they use so students and parents know that it’s a class about God and His Instructions to us all,” she explained.

Then that following Monday morning, Meagan and Stephy couldn’t keep their heads from bumping together, but all that did was make them giggle.

“Mrs. Mumford!” Meagan shouted; waving her hand fiercely in the air.

“Yes Meagan,” her teacher replied. “Do you have a question?”

Meagan stood up so that everyone could hear her better. Then she said, “No, I just wanted to say that my parents and I really loved reading the Scriptures together last night that you said to read, and ummmm…..they said to me, “Meagan, your teacher is right and we are so glad about what she is teaching……The Presence of God is much more powerful than the presence of any person……And, when we were reading, we all felt it, even my little sister,” she explained; running her palm back and forth over the back of her chair, even though she wasn’t the least bit nervous.

“Oh that’s great Meagan! I’m so glad you shared that with me and the class,” Mrs. Mumford replied. “And there’s even more that we could say about the Presence of God. Has anyone else anything to add?” She inquired. Several students raised their hands enthusiastically.

“Sam, what did you learn?”

“My parents and I were saying last night that God is always there, but people can’t always be there ready to talk to us at all times. And they also said that when we seek Him, He will give us wisdom and guidance that no one else knows about, or send someone with that message of wisdom as His Mouthpiece to let us know. And they also said that God will oftentimes turn our bad into good when we abide in His Will for us.”

“Very good. Thank you for that Jake,” replied Mrs. Mumford.

Then another student stood up and said, “My dad told me that he can hear what God is saying to him  and him alone and that only happens when he’s all alone spending time with Him.”

“Excellent,” replied Mrs. Mumford.

Then another student stood up and announced, “My mom said to me this morning…..she said Lily…..you know that friends are a great thing and we are blessed by God to have them, but I have to tell you that with people you never know. They hurt us and disappoint us when they don’t do what they say they will do, whether on purpose or on accident, but with God we know that He is always there for us and if He doesn’t do something that we thought He would do and we just can’t figure it out, well…….we can still be assured that He knows what’s best for us and always does what’s best for us even if we don’t understand, and it seems wrong to us. And He always does what He says He will do,” she declared.

“Wonderful! That’s exactly right, God will never leave us nor forsake us and He always has our best interest at heart, and He always keeps His Promises! So we can see that with God we are never alone, even when there are no people around! And isn’t that the most comforting thought ever?”

“YES!” they all stood up and shouted.

“Please tell your parents for me tonight that they get an A+ for their input And you kids have really impressed me with your understanding. It all goes to show that when we seek Him, He shows up! And even the young can have understanding! Amen!”

And all the students shouted, “AMEN!”
