His Decrees

“I Decree …!”

When we hear the word “decree” we generally think of an order, command or mandate from a person of royalty, authority, or a dictator of sorts. A decree is a bit more than simply telling someone what to do. In Biblical days decrees were mostly spoken and issued by Kings. In most cases it is a statement that becomes irreversible law. The decree can’t just be taken back. It was set in concrete and had to be carried out.

The Book of Daniel was full of decrees; orders issued by dictators with unquestionable authority. What they decreed had to be carried out without fail and without exception. Daniel was thrown into a den of lions because of a decree. The only way he escaped it was that God miraculously stopped the mouths of the beasts.

The three young Hebrew men were cast into a flaming hot furnace because of a decree. Their escape was also miraculous in that the Son of God Himself showed up in the flames with them. They escaped without so much as a singed hair because of it. But the decree was carried out.

God has made many decrees towards mankind. For instance, when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God was forced to decree a curse on mankind, animal life and the entire planet, Earth itself. It is irreversible. The only way of escape was that a sinless man had to give His life for the sin of all the world. Jesus did that. It doesn’t nullify God’s decree but it does provide an escape clause from its ultimatum: Eternal death. Jesus gave Himself, then was resurrected from the dead in order that we might be saved, thus giving us a way out of the decree.

God made another decree in Psalm 148:6. It says, “He also established them forever and ever; He made a decree which shall not pass away.” He will keep it. It was a decree concerning creation. Read the entire chapter and you will see. It is a promise to creation and it won’t pass away.

There are many decrees we could consider. But there are two in specific that were made by Jesus that we should mention today. First, the writer of Hebrews said in 13:6, “… I will never leave you nor forsake you.” What a decree! God. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ has made us this promise. Jesus said in Matthew 28:20, “… lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” This decree tells us that Jesus will not leave us. He will not forsake us. When life gets impossible, He won’t pack up and run. He will be right there beside us, with us, in us, and will see us through whatever trial it may be, whether sickness, physical attack, mental attack or emotional attack.

If you know Christ as your Lord and Savior, you have this promise. It is a decree from Him to each of us personally. He will be there. Even when our minds tell us that He is a million miles away; when the enemy whispers, “There are so many people in this world. What makes you think that God cares about you?” You can push past these remarks from your soul’s enemy by reminding yourself of what Jesus said. He won’t leave us. When we think He has, think again. He is right there beside you, always, forever. He goes through it with you. He decreed that He is with us until the end of this age – the end of time as we know it. He’s not going anywhere.

Yet He did go somewhere. He is forever with us by way of the Holy Spirit in us. He doesn’t leave us in our spirits. But another decree He made required Him to physically leave. Jesus said in John 14:2-3, “In My Father’s house are many mansions (rooms); if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” He physically left this world for Heaven to make a place for us to stay when He returns to take us home with Him. We have translated the Greek word “monai” as mansions. But the true meaning is “abodes.”

I always wondered about that. I thought, “man, a mansion sounds good” until I realized that I would spend eternity in a mansion all by myself. But when I studied and realized that the meaning of the word was actually more like a suite in God’s house, I got excited. The full context of that word means that we’ll live with God in His house. We will have an abode with plenty of space but we can leave our abode and visit with all our brothers and sisters who also live with God, and we can do that any time we want to. Now that’s exciting. That makes so much more sense.

So, spiritually our Lord is with us always but He is also getting our rooms ready in Heaven. When we go there, whether by way of death, or if we are among those who are “alive and remain” (see 1 Thessalonians 4:17), we will be with the Lord forevermore. That’s one decree I can’t wait to see fulfilled.
