Gods Judgement Made Manifest - The City of Tyre
by Rik Charbonneaux
2/26/2024 / Bible Studies
Most of you already know this example of the inerracy of God's Word and prophesy of judgements, but for those who do not, this unfolding of God's judgement against Tyre may be interesting historically for you as well*. The similarities between Ezekiel 26:4-6 and the historical record that agree are highlighted in bold italics:
The Lord's judgement against Tyre in the Book of Ezekiel:
"..therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea casting up its waves. 4 They will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock. 5 Out in the sea she will become a place to spread fishnets, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord. She will become plunder for the nations, 6 and her settlements on the mainland will be ravaged by the sword. Then they will know that I am the Lord." Ezekiel 26:4-6
The city was indeed defeated by Babylon in the "Siege of Tyre" from 586 to 573 BC, and the towers and walls were torn down, and the city was left mostly rubble.
Then, two-Hundred years later, Alexandria the Great assembled his forces and those of the nations he had already defeated (Alexander's Siege of Tyre - (33BC)** and used all the rubble and dirt, leaving only bedrock, to made a causeway with them out in the sea to the island where the residents of Old Tyre had moved to, leaving the old city site as a huge bare bedrock area. When his causeway reached the New Tyre**, he slaughtered 10,000 of it residents and sold 30,000 more into slavery. Four thousand were crucified, a practice that was later used by the Romans.
Old Tyre, until recently, existed as a bare rock area where fishermen would dry their nets.
God's Judgements always prove to become true to whom He spoke to through His prophets! Amen!
* For the complete story of what happened to Old and New Tyre***, read the excellent article "What happened to Tyre?" https//biblereadingarcheology.com/what-happened-to-tyre/comment-page-1/
** The site of New Tyre (4000 years old)still exists by that name today in Lebanon. (population 60K, Metro 174K) and is cons8dered one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. In recent times, Hezbollah has built apartments complexes on Alexander's Causeway and has expanded construction in the Old Tyre and New Tyre areas.
***Some historians still argue over all of these facts.
