Efficacy Of A Vow

by Olawale Ogunsola

In the Christian walk, sowing and reaping is a law that works wonders. It never fails. It is wisdom to think first of what to sow and consider what you want your harvest to be. Sowing comes in various forms.

One of the things to sow in the journey of life is a vow. A vow involves a resolution to do something by all means for the Lord against all odds. A vow is not amendable or canceled. Once it is uttered, it becomes mandatory to be performed to the last letter.

A closer look at the Holy Scriptures reveals that all who vowed a vow and fulfilled it reap bountiful harvests from it.

One such person is a man after the heart of God, King David. In one of the songs of degrees, a reminder of his resolution to find a place of rest for the name of the Lord and the representative of His strength, the Ark of Covenant takes place for all to learn.

He swore,
132:3 "Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;
I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,
Until I find a place for the LORD, a habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. Psalm 132: 3-5
One thing worthy of note about a vow is that it involves sacrifices or self-denial. In the case of King David, he purposed not to visit his house and deny himself of sleep for as long as it took to find a place of rest in the name of the Lord and the Ark of Covenant. Until is like a blank check (cheque) on which any amount can be written. It means that the King will continue to deny himself of certain comfort as long as it takes without wavering.

The vow was fully paid. Hallelujah! What was the outcome? A productive and unending vow followed.
"The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.
I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.
There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.
His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish." Psalm 132: 11,15, 17-18.

As a result of King David's vow which he fulfilled, the Lord also swore as contained in the verses quoted above. The Lord's vow is also all-encompassing. It involved David, his children after him, and his habitation and her inhabitants forever. He swore in truth. The Scripture calls it a covenant of salt, 2 Chronicles 15:5. It is a perpetual covenant. It is not alterable forever as long as the children of King David obey the Lord God of their father.

Do you know that the same holds for all who fear and obey the commandments of the Lord today and always? Do you know that a vow from you will generate a superior vow from the Lord? If you deny yourself some comfort by swearing, it will birth great blessings unimaginable from the Lord.

Strong Warning!
You have to be very careful in making a vow. It should not be made in a hurry without proper consideration of your ability to fulfill it. No excuse is allowed for failure to stand by it. It will even deserve a serious sanction from the Living Lord because He never imposes it on you. The Scriptures reveals,
"Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither says thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?" Ecclesiastes 5:5-6.
Bearing the above warning in mind, you can still go ahead to make a reasonable vow to provoke a greater and better vow from the Lord your God. May the Lord help you to take proper steps of faith that will benefit you and generations after you in the name of Jesus Christ. Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord.

*All Scriptures quoted are from the King James Version of the Holy Bible.
