COME AS A LITTLE CHILD: Study, Matthew 18:2-4
by linzy bruno
7/26/2023 / Bible Studies
“Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as a little child, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
“Nobody wants to be wrong. It’s a human impulse to hide being wrong, but it’s so liberating to just admit that you were wrong and that you don’t know everything. It’s so freeing because now you don’t have to be afraid of being found out that you were wrong, because only God is always right, only He knows everything…... There’s no longer anything to hide!” This is a loose quote from Tucker Carlson and it is so true.
Admitting to ourselves (and others!) that we do not know everything, but God DOES, is a great place to start on the road of humility toward true salvation.
We cannot change ourselves, but God will change us if and when we take that first step, like a little child’s first step into a parent’s awaiting arms; He will make us brand new:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2Corinthians 5:17)
This first step is simply the decision to stop fighting against God and the Work He wants to do in us. It’s the surrender we exalt in song, through our church hymns. First comes surrender, then trust without question, that we are finally able to rest whether we understand what God is doing in our lives or not….
We cannot come to Him unless we are humbled in our attitudes about ourselves, then confess that we are helpless without Him to overcome our sins and our propensity toward those sins unless God does a work in us through Holy Spirit conversion.
Jesus said that unless we come to Him with the humility and innocent blind trust of a child, we cannot enter His Kingdom of Heaven. For if we come to Him in our natural state of pride, arrogance and self-importance, we come with our own preconceived notions, thus, we will not be able to receive the Truth of God, that He is everything and knows everything, and that we are nothing, (without Him) in order that we may made humble and become born again, as we read in John 3:1-8.
Pride is the enemy that attempts to keep us from becoming born again, for pride is only interested in the desires and exaltation of the self, and not concerned with pleasing God:
“For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” (1John 2:16)
“Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.” (James 1:9-10)
Therefore, we must lose sight of our own interests if we want to come to the Throne of God like little children. Little children do not abide in pride and are not opinionated. They believe what they are told without question, in all innocence, and without a self-seeking agenda.
The illustration of coming as a little child is ironically powerful; as children, we have no actual power, but this lesson which comes by way of a child is powerful, nonetheless.
