Silently observed

When King Saul was more frequently troubled by an evil spirit from the LORD, his servants prescribed a rare solution to his problem.

Instead of looking out for a spiritualist or an exorcist, they requested: "Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to SEEK OUT a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well."

How come they were looking for a musician, a music instrumentalist to be precise? Is music that related to spiritual cleansing? Honestly, you don't want to underestimate the power of music in dealing with spiritual issues.

Let's discuss this in details some other day.

However, the need at hand was so pressing that the servants needed the king's immediate permission to embark on a search for this skilful harp player.

I want to repeat that getting this music person must require a search, because they were not looking for an average player, but a skilful player.

Now, I know that palaces are usually endowed with the best of musicians, suggesting that these servants should have simply picked one of the palace musicians without having to embark on a search.

Why go searching outside for what you have inside? But, did they really have this manner of a harp player within the palace? Obviously, not!

Hold on. I am still driving this article towards a point.

Do not forget that the king was being troubled by an evil spirit (from the LORD); he, therefore, wanted a cure and not just mere entertainment, as associated with palace music and musicians.

The need at hand was not entertainment, but healing. This time around, the music required must be able to travel beyond awaking the king's emotions into the soul and spirit of the king. Getting such a harp player was sure to require a search.

The moment Saul, therefore, replied, "Provide me NOW a man that can play well and bring him to me," the search began.

Amazingly, the search ended even before it took off.

There and then, one of the servants answered, "Behold, I HAVE SEEN a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, AND THE LORD IS WITH HIM."

Saul had hardly approved the search when one of his servants said he had seen the man they were to go out searching for.

This servant, claiming to have seen a man, was still right in the palace. He hadn't taken a step from where he was, yet he claimed to have seen this rare provision. How is that?

If you will permit my imagination to run, I believe this servant had, before now, noticed David playing his harp with the sheep as his audience.

Unknown to David, a servant of a king had spotted and noted him, probably thinking of how to appreciate David for being so skilful and committed to playing harp to 'mere' sheep.

David, being so skillful, could have organised a concert to promote himself, but he was satisfied with playing in the bush.

This servant had a good mind towards David, but he could not define what to do. He did not know how to support David; he was himself a mere servant. He had good intentions, but the opportunities were not available.

I wouldn't know how long he had noted David, but for the period, it was as though David was destined to play his harp in obscurity. The missing key to unlock the door for David was opportunity.

It eventually came!

The moment the servant heard that a skilful player was needed, he immediately reconnected and suggested David; thus bringing the search to an end even before it began.

You will notice that this servant did not only mention David, he actually reeled out his qualifications. He told others why he felt David was their man.

In fact, although they were only looking for a skilful harp player, this servant revealed the extra qualities of/in David - a mighty valiant man, a man of war, prudent in matters, comely and above all, a man bearing God's presence.

What a servant!

Only God knows how long he had been observing David to have noted this much about him. Yet, all these qualities about David would have taken him nowhere had there not been a need for a musician at the palace.

Dear reader, every wonderful quality a man possesses will initially seem irrelevant until the need for it arises (in lofty places).

The gift of Joseph to dream and interpret was best used in the prison until the need for the gift was needed at the palace.

Had Pharaoh not dreamt and unable to interpret his dream, Joseph and his gift would have been irrelevant.

Again, it's not out of place for a good man to need the recommendation of another to get to lofty heights. Is it? No! David was recommended by a servant of the king just as Joseph.

Unlike Joseph, who knew the butler who recommended him, David had no single idea a servant of the king had been taking notes of his life all along.

In conclusion, it won't be too much of a burden to pray or to ensure that you do not end up being a disappointment to the man recommending you to the king.

If Joseph and David did not disappoint anyone, not even God, when they got to the palace, why should you?

While waiting for the doors of opportunity to open up somewhere soon, may I urge you to keep doing your work diligently as ever. Your recommendation will bring the search to an end, even before it starts.

The search for what you have or do is approaching your doorstep. Be prepared!
