Domestic Violence: A Strange Perspective
by Olawale Ogunsola
6/18/2023 / Relationships
Introduction:
Violence has not been credited with anything good. In a society where violence prevails, progress will surely be retarded. Violence is a vice not only restricted to the larger society but it takes place in the home front. If violence does not benefit society at large, it cannot be of value to any home.
Homes are vital segments that form society. This means that violence at home spreads to other areas of society.
The experience of women in domestic violence is not palatable at all.
Violence at home takes place among members of the family: the father, the mother, and their children. Let me narrow this discussion to violence against women because it seems to be the most reported domestic violence. This has given rise to various laws being enacted to protect them.
Violence against women has caused various harm to them. Some have lost their lives through such vice that continues to spread these days.
No sane person will support domestic violence in any other form. It is totally to be condemned. It is wrong!
A woman many years ago was living with a man who seemed to derive joy in making a punching bag out of his wife. As much as he did this, the woman continued to live with him. Sometimes, they will engage each other in physical attacks to the extent that they would wound each other. They would separate from one another as husband and wife.
Do you know what?
This woman will still come back to the same man, a wife-beater. She will tell anyone who cares to listen, "I love my husband and I am not ready to divorce him."
There are many interpretations given to her words and actions. People can be right or wrong in their opinions.
An exception.
The woman's words and actions became clear to me in a recent disclosure by an elderly man of God who narrated a story he witnessed.
What was the story?
A woman who requested her husband to beat her regularly to please her in the early days of their marriage. She told the man that doing so will give her joy and his way will be prosperous. Do you know what? A few years later, the man was blessed and comfortable to the extent that he distributed his goods with an aircraft. What a mystery!
I found it very difficult to believe. How can a woman make such an inordinate request when there are so many things to request from her husband? She knows better.
Believable? Do you know why the story is believable?
I remember the story of a man of God in the Scriptures who must be beaten to be able to prophesy.
"[35]Meanwhile, the lord instructed one of the groups of prophets to say to another man, “Hit me!” But the man refused to hit the prophet.
[36]Then the prophet told him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the lord, a lion will kill you as soon as you leave me.” And when he had gone, a lion did attack and kill him.
[37]Then the prophet turned to another man and said, “Hit me!” So he struck the prophet and wounded him." 1 King 20.
The fear of the first one who refused to hit the Prophet was Psalms 105:15
[15]“Do not touch my chosen people,
and do not hurt my prophets.”
Now, the source of a man's inspiration was to "hit him", Anyone who fails to do so will lose his life. Can you understand the mystery of life further? The second person the Prophet approached hit him until he wounded him. Why? To save his life because he was a witness to the death of someone who failed to do so.
Conclusion.
Now, which one is stronger and better to run a marriage, Law or Love? In the strange story above, the husband did not like to beat his wife. The law did not support it. The wife demanded it. What will the husband do if he wants to please his wife? Give her what she loves when she loves it. What will the Constitution do? To deny the woman her "fundamental human rights"?
Which is stronger and better: Love or Law?
Love or no love, law or no law, violence or no violence, do you remember that the Lord is coming soon? Let me leave you with the question, "Where will He meet you? Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord.
