*7 REASONS WHY EVERY BELIEVER SHOULD PAY THEIR TITHES — PART 1*
*INTRODUCTION*
Tithe is 10 per cent of one’s income or money or material blessing.
One can tithe from one's gross income or net income.
One should not tithe from money given one for school fees or capital given one for business or investment.
Rather, one should tithe from money for upkeep (pocket money), profit on investment, salary, and so on.
Now, let's look at the reasons why every believer should pay their tithes to their respective local Churches or assemblies.
*REASON 1: TITHES STARTED BEFORE THE LAW; WERE EFFECTIVE AND REINFORCED UNDER THE LAW; AND CONTINUES AFTER THE LAW (UNDER GRACE)*
*BEFORE THE LAW*
Genesis 14:14-20 KJV
And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants , born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. [15] And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. [16] And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people. [17] And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale. [18] And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. [19] And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: [20] And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. *And he gave him tithes of all.*
Hebrews 7:3-10 KJV
Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. [4] Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch *Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.* [5] And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: [6] But he whose descent is not counted from them *received tithes of Abraham,* and blessed him that had the promises. [7] And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. [8] And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them , of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. *[9] And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. [10] For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.*
*UNDER THE LAW*
Deuteronomy 12:6,11 KJV
And thither ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows, and your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks: [11] Then there shall be a place which the Lord your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the Lord :
Malachi 3:8-10 KJV
*Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. [9] Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. [10] Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse,* that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
*AFTER THE LAW*
Jesus said: *Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: THESE OUGHT YE TO HAVE DONE, AND NOT TO LEAVE THE OTHER UNDONE.* (Matthew 23:23 KJV).
Now, let's see this verse above in other versions below:
Matthew 23:23 NLT
*"How terrible it will be for you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to TITHE even the tiniest part of your income, but you ignore the important things of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. YOU SHOULD TITHE, YES, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT LEAVE UNDONE THE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS.*
Matthew 23:23 NIV
*"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a TENTH of your spices —mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law —justice, mercy and faithfulness. YOU SHOULD HAVE PRACTICED THE LATTER, WITHOUT NEGLECTING THE FORMER.*
Matthew 23:23 AMPC
*Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you give a tenth of your mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected and omitted the weightier (more important) matters of the Law–right and justice and mercy and fidelity. THESE YOU OUGHT [PARTICULARLY] TO HAVE DONE, WITHOUT NEGLECTING THE OTHERS.*
Matthew 23:23 BBE
*A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you make men give a tenth of all sorts of sweet-smelling plants, but you give no thought to the more important things of the law, righteousness, and mercy, and faith; BUT IT IS RIGHT FOR YOU TO DO THESE, AND NOT TO LET THE OTHERS BE UNDONE.*
It's a pity that some believers argue blindly as if tithes started under the law.
As seen above, it began with Abraham, consolidated with Moses and continues with Jesus who was the Bridge between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
You see, Jesus came to fulfil the law and the prophets in the Old Testament and launch grace in the New Testament.
Matthew 5:17-18 NLT
*17 "Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them. 18 I assure you, until heaven and earth disappear, even the smallest detail of God's law will remain until its purpose is achieved.*
John 1:17 KJV
*For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.*
Very importantly, the New Testament began not when Jesus walked this earth, but after he had died and resurrected as shown in this Scripture below:
Hebrews 9:15-17 KJV
*And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. [16] For where a testament is , there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. [17] For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.*
Hebrews 9:15-17 AMPC
*15 [Christ, the Messiah] is therefore the Negotiator and Mediator of an [entirely] new agreement (testament, covenant), so that those who are called and offered it may receive the fulfillment of the promised everlasting inheritance–since a death has taken place which rescues and delivers and redeems them from the transgressions committed under the [old] first agreement. 16 For where there is a [last] will and testament involved, the death of the one who made it must be established, 17 For a will and testament is valid and takes effect only at death, since it has no force or legal power as long as the one who made it is alive.*
Actually, the New Testament was enforced on the Day of Pentecost by the Holy Spirit!
ARE WE STILL UNDER THE LAW TODAY?
Matthew 5:17-18 KJV
Think not that I am come to DESTROY the law, or the prophets: I am not come to DESTROY, but to fulfil. [18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
According to Strong's Dictionary, the Greek word translated "destroy" twice in verse 17 above is *"kataluo"* and it means *"to destroy utterly, to overthrow completely."*
So, Jesus came to fulfil the law and the prophets, and not to destroy them utterly, nor to overthrow them completely.
After fulfilling all the writings of the law and the prophets about Him, He put an end to the law through His death!
That was why He cried out on the cross moments before He died: "It's finished" (See John 19:30)!
And also, that was why the temple curtain or veil rent or tore downwards subsequently (See Matthew 27:50-51).
Colossians 2:14 BBE
*Having PUT AN END TO the handwriting of THE LAW which was against us, taking it out of the way by nailing it to his cross;*
Ephesians 2:14-15 NLT
14 For Christ himself has made peace between us Jews and you Gentiles by making us all one people. He has broken down the wall of hostility that used to separate us. *15 By his death he ENDED the whole system of JEWISH LAW that excluded the Gentiles. His purpose was to make peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new person from the two groups.*
Ephesians 2:15 KJV
*Having ABOLISHED in his flesh the enmity, even THE LAW of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;*
According to the same Strong's Dictionary, the Greek word translated "abolished" in verse 15 above is *"katargeo"* and it means *"to be (render) entirely idle (useless), lit. or fig: — destroy."*
It also reveals that as a verb, it means lit., "to reduce to inactivity."
This dictionary also says concerning "abolish" in Ephesians 2:15 that "not loss of being is implied, but loss of well being."
Therefore, Jesus rendered the law entirely idle or useless. He destroyed it. He reduced it to inactivity.
We are under grace, no more under the law, nevertheless, some Scriptures under the law still applies to us today (See Romans 6:14-15, Galatians 5:18, 22-23).
*EXAMPLES OF RELEVANT SCRIPTURES IN THE LAW APPLICABLE TO US TODAY IN THE NEW TESTAMENT*
(1) 1 Corinthians 9:8-10 KJV
*Say I these things as a man? or saith not THE LAW the same also? [9] For it is written in THE LAW OF MOSES, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.*
(2) 1 Corinthians 14:21-22 KJV
*In THE LAW it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. [22] Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.*
(3) John 10:34-35 KJV
*Jesus answered them, Is it not written in YOUR LAW, I said, Ye are gods? [35] If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;*
(4) John 8:17 KJV
*It is also written in YOUR LAW, that the testimony of two men is true.*
2 Corinthians 13:1 KJV
*This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.* (See Deuteronomy 17:6; Deuteronomy 19:15)
(5) Malachi 3:10 KJV
*BRING YE ALL THE TITHES into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.*
*JOHN, THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS*
Matthew 11:13 KJV
*For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.*
Luke 16:16 KJV
*The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.*
A research into the original context of these two verses above reveals that all the prophets and the law gave foretelling or futuristic prophecies about Jesus, but John gave a forthtelling or non-futuristic prophecy about Him.
In other words, all the prophets and the law FORETOLD: "The Messiah is coming!" but John FORTHTOLD: "The Messiah is here!"
So, John was a greatly favoured prophet who introduced Jesus to Israel (see John 1:31).
Luke 24:44 KJV
*And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.*
And Jesus' coming was not to overthrow all what the law and the prophets before John had written about Him, but to fulfill them!
*SUMMARY OF THE LAW AND PROPHETS*
Matthew 22:35-40 KJV
Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, [36] Master, which is the great commandment in the law? *[37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.*
Matthew 7:1-5,12 KJV
Judge not, that ye be not judged. [2] For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. [3] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? [4] Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? [5] Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. *[12] Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.*
The law and the prophets can be summarized in one word: LOVE!
*LOVE IS THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW!*
Romans 13:8-10 KJV
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: *for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.* [9] For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [10] Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: *therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.*
Galatians 5:13-14 KJV
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. *[14] For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.*
Galatians 6:2 KJV
*Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.*
James 2:8 KJV
*If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:*
*CHRIST JESUS IS THE FULFILLER OF THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS.*
Romans 8:1-4 KJV
*There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [2] For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. [3] For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: [4] That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.*
Luke 24:44 KJV
*And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.*
Jesus' teachings, life, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and glorification fulfilled what the law and the prophets wrote about Him!
Matthew 5 shows us Jesus' teachings on love, which fulfills the law.
He went further and practicalized love until He had fulfilled everything written in the law and the prophets concerning Him without omitting the smallest letter or the least stroke of a pen therein.
Matthew 5:17-18 NIV
*17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.*

*SINNER’S CONFESSION*
If you are not yet born-again, say this:
I choose to repent today. Also I choose to believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose up for my justification.
The Scripture says, *“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved”* (Rom 10:9).
Therefore, I believe in Jesus in my heart and confess Him as my Lord. Now I am born-again (Amen).
*SAY THIS ALOUD TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT*
Also Jesus said, *“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses…”* (Acts 1:8).
And on the day of Pentecost *“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance”* (Acts 2:4).
Therefore, I receive the Holy Spirit by faith right now and I begin to speak in an unknown tongue (unlearned tongue) as He gives me the utterance.
I command every foul spirit [spirit of fear, spirit of unbelief, spirit of doubt, religious spirit, unforgiving spirit…] wanting to hinder me to stop in its evil operation in my life in Jesus’ name.
Thank you God for filling me with your Spirit in Jesus’ name (Amen).
