THE 10 VIRGINS OF MATTHEW 25
by linzy bruno
3/11/2023 / Bible Studies
This Parable of 5 true believers and 5 extremely carnal believers is perhaps the clearest picture of the genuine conviction God requires for salvation that we see in God’s Word. All are believers, as we know from Jesus calling them ‘virgins;’ those who have never strayed from the One True God and believe on Christ Jesus as their Savior.
But 5 of them will not be ready to stand before the Lord, to them the Lord will say “I do not know you…” The Parable is past tense, as it has already been delivered, but the event is still to come-- the Rapture! This event marks the end of the present age and gives way to the 7 year tribulation; the worst time to ever come on the earth!
The Parable of the 10 virgins is a picture of the Jewish wedding and the Jewish wedding is a picture of the Rapture.
Also noteworthy, this Parable from our Lord Jesus comes immediately following His Warning of the End of Days; the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24.
The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins
“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.
6 “And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
11 “Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’
13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.”
VERSE BY VERSE BREAKDOWN
Verse 1—The 5 are pictured with oil in their lamps; ready to meet their Bridegroom. This is a parallel to the Jewish wedding. The Bridegroom has a glass of wine with the father of the bride, while she waits in an undisclosed location for Him to come for her. She has to be ready, as she knows not his exact time of arrival.
Verse 2—Although all are believers; (virgins being synonymous) 5 of them are an illustration of today’s sleepy church. Their false doctrine of woke ideology is a severely watered down Gospel that teaches believers that they are sanctified in their sins. The other 5 were ready for the arrival of their Bridegroom, inasmuch as the Holy Spirit dwells within them.
Verse 3—The foolish virgins are not preparing to meet their Bridegroom. The oil refers to the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, their faith is merely head knowledge. Their hearts are not right before the Lord.
Verse 4—The wise have oil in their lamps.
Verse 5—Waiting for Him; they all fell asleep.
Verse 6—Their Bridegroom calls for them!
Verse 7—They all awake to trim their lamps.
Verse 8—The foolish, as a consequence for their laziness, find they have no oil and try to get the other 5 to give them some.
Verse 9—The wise refuse this request; knowing the Holy Spirit cannot be shared, but each one needs to have an intimate relationship with Him.
Verse 10—While the foolish go out to find oil to purchase for their lamps, the wise are ready and meet their Bridegroom and go to the Wedding….. AND then the door is shut!
Verse 11—The foolish then plead to be allowed into the wedding.
Verse 12—Jesus says He Never knew them.
Verse 13—Jesus concludes with one final Word of warning saying to “watch” for His Coming, and like the Jewish wedding. They/we cannot know the exact moment that will occur, therefore, they need to live ready, watch and pray!
This Parable is perhaps the most earth-shattering of all of Jesus’s teachings through Parables, as it comes as a strong and ominous warning to all spiritually lazy Christians.
This strong prophetic picture is pronounced through these verses, indicating the soon closing of the doors of the Church Age; followed by a time that will be the worst to ever come to those remaining on the earth: the 7 year tribulation.
And how does Jesus conclude this Parable? With the scariest Words ever to come out of our LORD'S Mouth, “I do not know you.” The door has been “shut” (V.10).
Parallel Verses:
“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;” (Matthew 25:41-42)
” When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’” (Luke 13:25)
“And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!” (Luke 12:4-5)
"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:12-13)
