Romans 8:28
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
The prophet Jeremiah prophesised about the exile of God’s people into Babylonian captivity. There were three exiles before Jerusalem was finally breached and burned. Jeremiah was one of the remnants left in Jerusalem until the final exile. Prior to the fall of Jerusalem, he writes to his people already exiled, prophesying that they will remain in Babylon for 70 years. But God would not abandon his people there. He had a plan to restore them. A plan to bring shalom on his loved ones with a promise of a hope filled future.
In his prophesy, Jeremiah instructs the Jews to build houses and live in them. To plant gardens and eat their produce. He says, “Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” Finally, after 70 years of exile, the Lord fulfils his promise to restore the fortunes of people. Jerusalem and the temple are rebuilt under Nehemiah and Ezra around 587 BC. Jerusalem still stands today.
You may feel as though you’re in a Babylonian exile today. Perhaps you’ve lost your job or find yourself in a desolate place. It could be your circumstances have change such that you wake up every morning longing back for the good ‘ol days of peace and comfort. If that’s you then God’s promise is, “I know the plans I have for you, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
No matter what you season of life you’re in, your story can end in restoration. So, fix your eyes on Jesus and acknowledge the Lord every day. Seek the Lord on how you can be an influence under the circumstances you find yourself today. As with the Jews in Jeremiah’s day, the Lord promises you shalom - peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, tranquillity and welfare.
So, hang in there. You will soon be restored. But until that happens, strive for the welfare of your predicament. Its welfare will be your welfare.

SO, DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY
“Dear God, I want what you want for me.”
“O Lord, I feel like I’m sitting in no-man’s-land today. Things have not worked out the way I’ve planned. And yet, I know that you know the plans you have for me. I trust that it’s your plan to take me through this predicament and deliver me to a place of peace and security. Thank you for the hope I have in your shalom. Help me O Lord, to make the most of this situation as I look forward to the new things you have planned for me. Amen.”
