FREE FROM SELF

Abiding in the freedom of self will does not refer to freedom from responsibility, nor will it keep us from the wrath of others. What this actually points to is freedom from offense.
Moreover, this principle of freedom allows us to abide in the freedom to say no to ourselves; it is the freedom from the bondage of self. This is not referring to the slavery the world imposes through imprisonments of any sort, but the bondage of sin and useless things that keep believers in the preoccupation of self. Sin keeps us in bondage to things that offend our Lord God.
And when we abide in the liberty only Christ Jesus can provide, we are free to grow in Christlikeness. God’s Word illustrates this precept through the following passages:
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1)
“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:31-36)
“Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (2Corinthians 3:17)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” (Galatians 5:22-26)
Moreover, those who are in Christ are free from the law, which means God deals with us as individuals; what may be sin to someone else is not necessarily sin to everyone collectively. For example, someone who has a problem with alcohol sins every time they take a drink, whereas, for someone without that problem, drinking without becoming intoxicated is not a sin for that person. This is the liberty for those of us in Christ Jesus, and the list of examples is endless. For someone with diabetes, resisting sugar is essential to their well-being and they even may feel God chastising them over their unhealthy diet, but certainly, consuming sweets in and of itself is not sinful at all....
Furthermore, the Bible teaches in James 4:17 that when we know we are avoiding doing something good, simply because we don't feel like, that is sin:
"Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin."
In addition, considering food given to idols, Paul teaches that it isn't so much about what we do, but why we do it. And Paul includes a few more examples "or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,"(Colossians 2:16b). With these examples included in this teaching, we can clearly discern that our problems with things we do are based in our motives and our unique situations, afflictions and sinful propensities.
"Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle," which all concern things which perish with the using---according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposing religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh." (Colossians 2:21-23)
