Christian Anger (1)
by Olawale Ogunsola
8/26/2022 / Christian Apologetics
Before I settle for this title, there was a tussle between many tittles jostling for recognition to occupy the place of CHRISTIAN ANGER. A few of such are: Godly anger; Righteous anger; Be Angry like God; Anger is an attribute of God, and many others. I know that my reader may have other title(s) that can rightly fit into the one choosen.
I just decided to use this title among many that came up. Let me give a reason for my deliberate choice. Every follower of Christ is known to be a Christian and many believe that it is forbidden for them to be angry.
Let me start by saying that in creation, God created mankind in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26). These two words are with different meanings. Image speaks of the picture of God while Likeness talks of His Characters or behavior or manners.
Therefore, to be a Christian is to manifest ALL ATTRIBUTES OF JESUS CHRIST. This was the situation in Antioch where Disciples were first called CHRISTIANS,( Act's 11:26).
Does Jesus possess the Image and Likeness of God His Father? Jesus Christ describes it thus,
"I and my Father are one." John 10:30.
If Jesus is one with His Father in image and likeness, Christians cannot afford to be less. Therefore, to be like Jesus Christ is to be restored to the initial nature of man before the fall of man in the garden of Eden.
GOD'S ANGER.
God cannot only be angry but He can be wrathful. It is one of His nature. His anger is good anytime He expresses it to those who deserve it. May we not experience God's anger in Jesus name.
The Scripture records "Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah and God struck him there for his error and he died there by the ark of God. 1 Samuel 6:7
The purpose of this display of anger was the victim's error. He acted wrongly. May the Lord help us so that we shall not misbehave in His sight in Jesus name.
Let us consider how Jonah describes God in chapter four and verse two of his book,
"... for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest of evil." (King James Version)
Let it be reiterated here that all the time, God combines these and other attributes with that of anger. He never single out anger for demonstration. Consider what He said before He wasted the lives of His people who rebelled against Him in the wilderness in Numbers 14:26-29,
"And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, saying,
How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me.
Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you.
Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me."
Beloved reader, please pay attention to the truth that it was God's rebellious people who pronounced death judgements on themselves and their children, unknowingly. God after bearing or tolerating them for a long time could not continue doing so. He decided to confirm the death sentence they pronounced on themselves.
That is an anger of God against evil congregation and rebellion for you.
Let me not fail to state here that God's anger is not meant for destruction everytime. Sometimes, it is meant to correct His people from a wrong. Afterall, He is our Father and a good father will always correct any erring child to put him on the right track always. Apostle Paul explains to every Believer in the book of Hebrews, 12:7 thus,
"If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons, for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?"(NKJV)
God's anger, sometimes is to correct His people.
CHRIST'S ANGER.
Like His Father, Jesus also demonstrated His anger. Coupled with other attributes, He could not also tolerate evil deeds and He acted to put an end to it. The Scripture reveals,
"And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, poured out the changers' money and overturned the tables. And He said to those who sold doves, 'Take these things away! Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!.' " John 2:14-16.(NKJV).
It was after this show of righteous anger that the Holy Spirit reminded His disciples the motive behind His action that,
"Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up." John 2:17(NKJV).
In essence, it means that His anger was to fulfill the Scriptures.
Do you think Jesus Christ was happy when He rebuked satan in Peter's life? Definitely no! He must have done so angrily, Matthew 16:22-23.
A CHRISTIAN ANGER
Now, should a sincere and faithful Christian be blamed for being angry at an evil word or action? Do you blame an angry true Christian when His God-given assignment on the Earth is to be put in jeopardy? Let me draw this part one into conclusion by referring you to the book of James 4:7 saying,
"Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."
Resistance involves force which may carry along with it anger.
Therefore, it is not a sin for a Christian to be angry when the need arises and in the right place and way.
Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
SALVATION MESSAGE: It is salient to become a new person today by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Confess your sins to Him and He will forgive you forever. Determine to forsake your sins and He will give you the Holy Spirit to help you in the journey of your life so that you can live to please Him. Remain blessed in Jesus name.
