Truth You Can Use: God Has Feelings!
by Tonja Taylor
7/09/2022 / Christian Living
I will set My dwelling in and among you, and My soul shall not despise or reject or separate itself from you.--Leviticus 26:11, AMPC
God--the Creator and Sustainer of all life (Genesis 1); the LORD of the Heavens and earth, and everything--has emotions, and I have good news: God is a positive God! He loves us, and wants a deep, amazing, and sublimely satisfyting relationship with us!
Wow, and more wow!
Many people wrongly think God has no feelings about them, or they think He is just angry. The LORD has a soul--mind, will, emotions. He has feelings, just like us. In fact, all our emotions come out of Him, for He created us (Genesis 1:26-28; I Corinthians 11:12).
God--like we can, through the soul (mind, will, emotions) which He gave us--made a choice: to forgive us (through what Jesus paid with His life on the cross! John 3:14-17, Romans 5:6) and never be angry with us again, but to show us great mercy, favor and grace; to be at peace with us. Hallelujah!
He is not angry--for the anger at the fall of man, at sin, was assuaged forever when Jesus willingly shed His pure blood on the cross for us, to take away our sin forever, when we come to Him, admit our need for His forgiveness and cleansing, and agree with Him that He alone is our Savior and LORD!
9 For this is like the days of Noah to Me; as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn that I will not be angry with you or rebuke you. 10 For though the mountains should depart and the hills be shaken or removed, yet My love and kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace and completeness be removed, says the Lord, Who has compassion on you.--Isaiah 54:9-10, AMPC
He loves us so much! He is the ultimate good, good Father!
For [the Spirit which] you have now received [is] not a spirit of slavery to put you once more in bondage to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption [the Spirit producing sonship] in [the bliss of] which we cry, Abba (Father)! Father!--Romans 8:15, AMPC
It is His Spirit that draws us to Himself, reveals to us that we need Jesus as our Savior, and then gives us faith to believe and receive Him, and be born again into a glorious, victorious new, eternal life with Him! Hallelujah!
Faith is simply trusting God, and we cannot even have that without Him giving it to us, for He is the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
He gives us faith--trust in Him--and keeps drawing us by His Spirit to seek Him and strengthen our faith, our belief in Him (by reading, memorizing, meditating upon, and sharing His unchanging, unfailing Word; attending Bible-believing church; by praying (talking to and developing the relationship with Him, which includes listening to Him, not just bringing our requests to Him); by worshiping to true praise and worship music; by serving Him with our time, talents, skills, gifts, finances, possessions, and other resources and abilities; and whatever else we have), for all we have He has give us (I Chronicles 29:16, Phil. 4:19)!
But the just shall live by faith [My righteous servant shall live by his conviction respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, and holy fervor born of faith and conjoined with it]; and if he draws back and shrinks in fear. My soul has no delight or pleasure in him.--Hebrews 10:38, AMPC
I grew up thinking that, overall, God had negative emotions, but that's not true. Here's the real deal: God has emotions like we do, only He has perfect control of His--to our benefit--and He is Love (I John 4:8)! Hallelujah!
For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.--Malachi 3:6, KJV
In His soul--with His mind, will, and emotions--the LORD God has chosen to forgive and love us; even those who will never receive Him, even those who mock and deride Him. The moment they choose to repent (ask His forgiveness and stop going the wrong way and saying the wrong things), He will forgive and receive and save them! Now that's amazing Grace!
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.--2 Peter 3:9, KJV
The Lord appeared from of old to me [Israel], saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you.--Jeremiah 31:3, AMPC
The word "soul" is mentioned 190 times in the Amplified Classic Version (my favorite) of the Bible. "Soul" means "mind, will, and emotions," but most of us know that our emotions-our feelings--can definitely affect what we think, and what we decide; how we exercise our will, our power to choose.
Decisions are made in the soul. How we decide from day to day--even hour to hour---which includes the words we speak, affects our life, in fact, creates our lives!
One of the major lessons the LORD has had to teach me is to 'take the emotion out of it, and just do it," This applies to more realms than I will cover in this writing, but the core of that is asking Him to reveal to you hurts, offenses, disappointments, unmet expectations, and the like, to expose and get rid of these things--to partner with the Holy Spirit to pull them up out of your soul, so your soul can be healed! He can and He will do it, but He is the ultimate Gentleman Who leads us to desire to be free, then helps us to get and stay free!
He answered, Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be torn up by the roots.--Matthew 15:13, AMPC
We have to choose, though! We have to ask Him and work with Him to show us the rubble and remove it (Nehemiah 4:10), so He can rebuild our lives with "precious stones" (Isaiah 54:11-12). Hallelujah!
He is the Restorer, and the Repairer of broken walls (Nehemiah 6:15, Isaiah 58:12)!
True peace and true joy and true love are fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), and when we yield to the Holy Spirit in us, these fruits are produced and bring deep and priceless satisfaction in our souls:
5 For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit. 6 Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever]. -- Romans 8:5-6, AMPC
The Word says that the body and spirit are God's (I Cor. 6:19-20), so the soul is where our freedom to choose (that He sovereignly gave us, which is why Adam and Eve had the power to choose, and chose wrongly, and plunged the whole human race into sin.
But God! God sent Jesus to redeem us in every way, Hallelujah! How good and gracious and faithful is our awesome loving God!)
[Christ, the Messiah] is therefore the Negotiator and Mediator of an [entirely] new agreement (testament, covenant), so that those who are called and offered it may receive the fulfillment of the promised everlasting inheritance—since a death has taken place which rescues and delivers and redeems them from the transgressions committed under the [old] first agreement.--Hebrews 9:15, AMPC
Hallelujah!
Behold, My Servant Whom I have chosen, My Beloved in and with Whom My soul is well pleased and has found its delight. I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall proclaim and show forth justice to the nations.--Matthew 12:18, AMPC
The LORD knows us better than we know ourselves, and when we have received His Son, Jesus, as our Savior and LORD, then we also become God's kids.
But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name—John 1:12, AMPC
He adores us! He even sings over us! Hallelujah!
The Lord your God is in the midst of you, a Mighty One, a Savior [Who saves]! He will rejoice over you with joy; He will rest [in silent satisfaction] and in His love He will be silent and make no mention [of past sins, or even recall them]; He will exult over you with singing.--Zephaniah 3:17, AMPC
He watches over us carefully, every moment--including while we're sleeping (and we trust Him totally when we sleep--or we'd never sleep!)
He will not allow your foot to slip or to be moved; He Who keeps you will not slumber.--Psalm 121:3, AMPC
The LORD has many emotions, but fear is not included! Our LORD is the Prince of Peace (Shalom), and He is totally fearless (I John 4:18)! Glory to God!
God never tries to make us, His kids, feel afraid (although He is the perfect Father and will correct us in love, and we change because we love and honor and respect Him, which is what "the fear of the LORD" really means).
Our Fahter never meant for people to experience fear! It entered in when man fell in the Garden of Eden, for it is the enemy who is full of fear. Thus, fear is never of God. (He does give us wisdom to do or not do certain things, but that is not fear!).
So when we are afraid of something or someone, that is not God! it is the enemy trying to make us feel like he, the foe that Jesus forever defeated at the cross, Hallelujah, feels. So, when we are truly born again by believing in the LORD Jesus as our Savior and LORD, we can refuse fear in the Name of Jesus, and yield to the peace of Jesus Christ within us! Hallelujah!
I'll wrap up with Scriptures from Psalm 34:4, and Luke 1:73-75, that I have in my kitchen, and see daily:
4 I sought (inquired of) the Lord and required Him [of necessity and on the authority of His Word], and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.--Psalm 34:4
Hallelujah!
73 That covenant He sealed by oath to our forefather Abraham: 74 To grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our foes, might serve Him fearlessly 75 In holiness (divine consecration) and righteousness [in accordance with the everlasting principles of right] within His presence all the days of our lives.--Luke 1:73-75, AMPC
Now, thank the LORD for your emotions, and ask Him to help you submit them to Him. This is an act of humility; an act of trusting the LORD with the deepeset part of you. He will, and the more you draw close to Him and yield to Him, the more your soul will be infused with sublime peace and joy!
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.--I Peter 5:6-7, KJV
When we trust Him with our emotions, worries, etc., then He will give us His peace, that guards our emotions, and helps us have a calm, cool spirit. Glory!
20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.--Romans 16:20, KJV
When we yield our emotions (thoughts, feelings, decisions) to our Prince of Peace, then we are abiding in Christ, and reflecting Him to ourselves and others. We are enforcing His peace, His rule, and bringing more of Heaven to earth!
