IDENTITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Freelance writer Lupie Riley
Thought: Does the Holy Spirit have a name?
Note: Scripture verses are printed out for your convenience. Taken from King James and Living Bible translations.
John 14:18-20 “I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you v.19 (who will come to them, Jesus). Yet a little while and the world seethe me no more (in his fleshly body) but ye see me; because I live, ye shall live also. In that day (Pentecost) ye shall know that I AM in my Father and ye in me and I IN YOU.”
Note: How can that be? When Jesus was in his fleshly body he couldn’t enter in anyone else’s body. But after his resurrection and ascension when he returned in his glorified body to his rightful place in Heaven, he sent back his Spirit to be able to set up residence in thousands of believers. The new name for the Holy Spirit was the Comforter. (Read Heb. 2:14-18)
John 14:23 “Jesus, (the God/man) answered and said unto them, if a man love me, he will keep my words; and my Father will love him and will come unto him (in Spirit) and make OUR (trinity) abode with him. John 14:16,17 “And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; v.17 Even the Spirit of TRUTH; (Jesus, the way the TRUTH and the life) whom the world cannot receive, because it seethe him not (like radio waves) neither knoweth him; but ye know him; (Jesus) for he dwelleth with you and shall be IN YOU. Jesus, the God/man returned as the Spirit Comforter at Pentecost.
Note: When we witness to someone, who do we ask them to invite into their heart? JESUS. Who stands at the door of our hearts knocking to gain entry? JESUS (Rev. 3:20).
Col. 2:9,10 “For in Him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, v.10. And you are complete in Him, which is the head of all principality and power. And we who have been baptized into union with Christ are enveloped by Him.” When we have Christ within, He is all power. We don’t need a secondary power experience with the Holy Spirit because He is God in Spirit. Eph. 4:5 “For us there is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism”. Phill. 2:6 “Who being in the form of God (trinity) thought it not robbery to be equal with God. Col. 2:5,6 “For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in Spirit, joying and beholding your order and steadfastness of your faith in Christ, v6 as ye have therefore received Christ Jesus, the Lord, so walk ye in him (Spirit).” Eph. 4:9,10 “Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the Earth (resting place of the dead). Va10 He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things (in Spirit).”
Note: He returned in Spirit as the Comforter so that he could be in all those who by faith invited Him into their lives. He couldn’t come back in His glorified body because that will happen when he returns as King of Kings and sets up his kingdom on Earth for 1,000 years. Some translations interpret the Holy Spirit as the Holy Ghost of Christ. Col. 1;27 “To whom God would make known what the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles is; which is Christ IN YOU, the hope of glory.”
Note: The Holy Spirit is not some invisible force but is indeed the very presence of Christ in Spirit. He did not leave us abandoned but returned in Spirit to be in all those who put their faith in Him. We have an intimate relationship with Christ Himself because in Him he possesses the completeness of the trinity; Father (Spirit), Son, (Jesus) and the Holy Ghost (the Spirit of Christ). The apostle Paul referred to the Spirit as LORD over 70times in the NT. What is the meaning of Lord? GOD, SAVIOR, MASTER over 700 times. God claims the title of Savior. When we pray in Spirit, we now have a relationship with God himself when the curtain was torn at Christs death. We can now come into that Holy place where God is. Christ is Jehovah who put on the flesh of man to save us from our sins and gives us forgiveness and eternal life. Rom.8:9,10 “Now if any man have not the SPIRIT OF CHRIST, he is none of his.
After living and experiencing everything of human life for a little over thirty years Jesus (the God/man) died on the cross. Through His redemptive death, we can now be forgiven of our mistakes and bad choices we’ve made in life. That void because of sin, has be restored and we now can have the relationship with God that He so desires. How can we ever say no to this free offer from our Lord that loves us unconditionally? The Holy Spirit does have a name and His name is Jesus.
Prayer: Father God, you provided the way back to you through Jesus. I can now have this intimate relationship with you once again through the sacrifice of Jesus whose blood has washed me clean, and I stand before you forgiven with a new hope of an eternal home with you and my loved ones who have gone on before me.
Verse: Heb. 10:19 “And so dear brothers, now we may walk right into the very Holy of Holies where God is, because of the blood of Jesus. This is the fresh, new, life-giving way which Christ has opened for us by the tearing of the curtain—his human body—to let us into the Holy presence of God.”
