GOD'S CURE FOR BOREDOM

by linzy bruno

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1Thessalonians 5:16-18)

"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded." (James 4:8)

God's Goodness is in everything, therefore, in even the worst of trials and tribulation, there is always something to be grateful for; something He spares us, something that He has sustained, or some new revelations realized. Meditating on all God has done for us personally has the power to change the dynamic and negativity of a humdrum mood and fill our souls with joy and rejuvenation.

Hence, in every situation, whether it be tragic or that feeling that nothing exciting ever happens, if gratitude is allowed to shine through; it's astounding how much that simple appreciation can help soothe and calm the soul.

It may seem overly simplistic, but the next time you feel bored, with extra time on your hands and begin to allow that feeling of discontentment to wash over you, try walking around your home slowly; taking in everything you see and thank God for everything in every room you enter that had meaning attached to it when it was first acquired or that reminds you of something or someone special. And don't just say thank YOU God, but allow that feeling of gratitude to be the new sensation that washes over you; squashing boredom like a bug. That feeling of gratitude has the potential to conquer that bored feeling, as you think about how much God has blessed your life with the necessities and more.

In addition, thinking about what we would do without those things may also lead to that sense of appreciation.

You say you don't like what you see? Take another look, what you own may not be among the best or the newest of things, but the fact that you have these things is evidence of God meeting your needs and that's cause for spiritual celebration.

Furthermore, gratitude changes us. When we make a practice of gratitude, we see our possessions in a whole new way, as things we needed that God provided and how long they have been lasting, rather than something less valuable than those things someone else you know owns, which also helps us fight jealousy.

Moreover, this whole new approach of facing the boredom challenge can make your down-time more enjoyable and cause your relationship with God to grow, which can lead to finding more in which to share with Him, as well as raise the quality of time spent.

Gratitude is a spiritual relationship-deepener; this Precept is highlighted in the Book of Job, as Job remains thankful to God, even in the midst of devastating, tragic events, like in this verse depicting his reaction to the loss of all of his children:

"While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, and suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!"

"Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped." (Job 1:18-20)

Notwithstanding this example is not related to boredom, this verse does highlight the saving grace in which gratitude can provide.

Job's godly attitude no doubt helped tremendously to build him up and help him cope with the slew of horrors in which Satan inflicted upon him and surely advanced his maturing relationship with the Lord, his experiences with Him and his appreciation for whatever and all he had left; including his own life preserved.

Other Verses Encouraging Spending Time With God & Gratitude:

"See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16)

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1Thessalonians 5:16-18)

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." (Revelation 3:20)

"Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me." (John 15:4)

"Both riches and honor come from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great And to give strength to all. "Now therefore, our God, We thank You And praise Your glorious name." (2Chronicles 29:12-13)

Matthew 6:6 & 33, Luke 5:16 & 6:12, Mark 1:35, Psalm 46:10, 63:1 & 6-8, 118:1 & 147:7, Philippians 4:6-7, 1Chronicles 16:11 & Hebrews 4:16
