CONFESSIONS OF A BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT
by linzy bruno
8/31/2021 / Short Stories
Deanna, who had been keeping busy playing the clock-watch game, while most of the other girls buried their faces in their compact mirrors, let out a big yawn and laid her head down on the table. 'I'm so sick of lessons on how to cut all the varying hair types, unforgivable fashion mistakes and what to do about clogged pores!....I need my parents' advice. I can't wait till they get home from their trip' she thought.
She looked around the room; not bothering to pick up her head and focused her eyes on her classmates: Lydia was struggling to free her arm after attempting to put her compact mirror back into her purse and in so doing, caught her bracelet on one of the zippers. Allison was busy scrolling through all the FaceBook goodies she had posted earlier that morning and giggling with delight over all the 'likes' and most shocking of all, Ginger was polishing her nails! In fact, it seemed like more so than ever, that every girl was lost in her own world during lectures. Suddenly Deanna straightened up at her teacher's shriek; one of alarming proportion:
"Sylvia! Madison and Taylor; what in the name of Kim Kardashian are you girls doing?"
After all the wild laughter subsided, Sylvia, who was taking selfies rather than working on her dummy head, Madison who was showing Taylor her new tattoos on her right thigh and shoulder rather than washing the combs and brushes like she was told and Taylor, who was just busy laughing at it all, suddenly stood at attention before their instructor; looking quite worried over the consequences of their actions.
Everyone else in the classroom grew silent as well, while Mrs. G contemplated her next move; tapping her chin, as she sauntered past each desk with her bulging eyes shooting daggers of suspicion across the room.
The 3 who were just reprimanded tried to act interested in the hairstyling technique instructions on the blackboard, while the rest of the class tried to hide their smirks and giggly smiles behind the palms of their hands.
As Mrs. G. continued her strategic stroll around the classroom; the students' urge to burst out laughing increased until it exploded in side-splitting hysteria.
At that, Mrs. G. quickly exited the room to gather her composure, while the students continued in uncontrollable laughter. She stayed away longer enough to enjoy an extra large cup of coffee in the teachers' lounge.
Meanwhile in the classroom, Deanna, the most quiet, meek one of all 25 girls started to feel herself go crazy. 'I can't take it anymore,' she thought, so she stood on top of one of the long working tables and called everyone to attention:
"You know you girls are not being very nice to Mrs. Gladstone and why are you acting this way anyway? I don't get it! Sylvia, you know you want to be a hairdresser; it's all you talk about! And the way you love make-up and clothes, you're perfect for beauty school. You should be getting A's! And Madison and Taylor, you guys love this glam biz too!
It's ME! I'm the one who shouldn't be here! For almost 4 whole months now I've kept it to myself, but I can't take it anymore!..... I am officially confessing my deep hatred for make-up! There, I said it!" she said with a dramatic throw-up of both her arms. "And I don't care that much about fashion and clothes......I think I would rather do something in the childcare profession...." she concluded, her words trailing off. Then she jumped off the table; throwing one of the dummy wigs to the floor and stormed out of the classroom, not even taking her homework question folder with her, and headed out of the door.
She slowly walked home; thinking: 'All those girls are so into themselves! All they do is take selfies and show off their sex appeal! Ugghhh!' She arrived home weary and still a little angered; her upset over her parents long romantic weekend now morphing into unexpected gratitude for the privacy.
"God, I don't think I should stay in this class, even though I'll have to forgo the credits! I'm feeling so guilty about considering quitting when it's been so hard on my parents financially and even in other ways.......What should I do Lord? I am seriously doubting this whole thing. I think I'd be better suited for a career that helps people a whole lot more than hairdressing can!"
After a long sleepless, prayerful night, Deanna knew that she had to change her major. She had a great deal of trouble staying awake in class the next day and even nodded off a few times.
"Deanna! Are you daydreaming?" her teacher shrieked; nearly knocking her off her stool.
"I'm okay," Deanna replied.
"Just what seems to be the problem?" she inquired again, after her 3 hour long lecture on matching the varying contours and shapes of faces with their own uniquely flattering hairstyles.
"Nothing's wrong Mrs. G," Deanna reassured her again; keeping her eyes on the giant clock on the wall.
'Only 10 minutes of class to go,' she thought with a faint smile.
"Well, if you want to talk about anything..... anything at all, I'm available for about a half an hour after class," Mrs. G graciously informed her; studying Deanna's sad demeanor.
"I appreciate that Mrs. G., but I think I have to figure this one out for myself," she replied.
The next morning, Deanna's parents arrived home from their long weekend.
"Mom, Dad! Welcome home!" she shouted; running into their arms.
"Hi Sweet....heart......D, is something wrong," her mother asked; hesitantly.
"I'm fine Mom, but I would like to have a little talk with you and Dad if you have a minute.
"Jim, Deanna wants to have a talk with us," her mother said.
"I hear her Marge," he replied, with a faint smile.
After pouring themselves a cup of coffee, Deanna and her parents sat down at the kitchen table. "What is it Sweety?" her mother couldn't help but begin...
"I'm fine Mom, but I'm really not enjoying my beauty school. I think it's better for those who enjoy being in the mirror all day and I don't know why, but I can't stand spending an hour every morning applying make-up that I don't feel I need or want on my face. That's why so many women have clogged pores ya know...." she remarked; starting to cry...."And who knows the kind of junk they put in that stuff ...I'm sure you can see what I'm saying....this is no attitude for a beauty school student!....... I don't even care to wear my hair any certain way or do hair in any particular style. I just let it grow and get a trim once in a while. I swear I don't know what I was thinking........Actually, yes I do, I wasn't taking college seriously.... I was just counting on beauty school being easy, but now I see.... it shouldn't be about easy! It's just not my personality......ya know, one time I was in the mall and this woman working at Pennies' Cosmetics counter looks right into my face and asks if I'm interested in seeing her make-up line...... I couldn't believe it; she looked right through me.... I just looked her straight in the face and replied: "No thanks.... I don't wear make-up" and she didn't know WHAT ta say!"
"Well.....it did seem a little weird to us that you picked that career," her mother replied; staring into her husband's eyes. "But we certainly wanted to support you."
"Yeah," her father said agreeably.
"So what do you want then or do you need more time to think it over?" her mother continued.
"Well, I'm not sure yet, but I do know I want to pick something that will help people; something involving children..." Deanna replied.
Both of her parents smiled at her warmly and then at each other.
The next morning, Deanna spoke with her Guidance Counselor and made the change.
'Thank You Lord,' she prayed that night. 'I know that You helped me see that beauty school is not the right for me AND thank YOU that now I get to learn how to help kids and their parents by becoming a Family Counselor! Now, I'm excited about school and my future!'
