A Shocking Conversation
by Pamela Walck
5/26/2021 / Short Stories
“Do you need a push?” I asked the elderly gentleman with a grey scruffy beard. With his weathered face, he looked at me sideways as he struggled to propel his wheelchair down a hall. Both of his legs were amputated.
“Sure,” he said.
I pushed him to the main entrance of the nursing facility. My lunch was almost over and I needed to get back to work as a physical therapist.
“So any plans for the afternoon?” I asked.
“Yeah, I’m going over to an apartment complex to see some girlfriends.”
“Ok.”
“Yes, I have sex with them. They all like me.”
I was shocked by what what just came out of his mouth. “Are you kidding around with me?”
“No. I go to their rooms, we have sex and then I go home.”
Out of my mouth flew the question, “What do you think God thinks about that?”
“God?”
“Yes, the Lord. I’m a Christian. I don’t know if you have any faith, but do you think He would want you to be doing that?”
“Well, I never thought about that,” he said.
“I can tell you right now, the answer is no. It’s sin. Sex is for a man and woman who are married. I used to fool around without being married and when I became a Christian I stopped doing that.
Look up 1 Corinthians chapter 6. I’m telling you this because I care. The Bible says that fornicators do not inherit the Kingdom of God. You really need to repent, turn from your sins and trust in Christ.”
“I have to go, I’m late,” I said. I would have liked to talk to the man longer, but I didn’t have time.
“Ok, thanks for the ride,” as he looked at me with a blank face.
As I walked away, I felt stunned and shaken up by the entire conversation. From that day forward, I prayed for the man and asked some my friends to pray too. I put him on the prayer list on my church website.
About six months later, I ran into that same man again. He came wheeling into the gym where I worked.
I’ve been wanting to see you,” he said. “Do you remember talking to me before?” he asked.
“Of course I do.”
“Well, I thought about what you said. Do you think the Lord can forgive me? I’ve stopped doing what I was doing before.” He really looked concerned.
“Yes, Leon, He can forgive anyone when they ask.” “I’m very sorry for all that I did.”
“That’s good Leon, because we have all sinned and need to be restored to a right relationship with God through Jesus.” We talked some more about what it means to follow Christ and be born again.
He asked me a few more times if his sins could be forgiven. I reassured him, saying that, “Paul persecuted Christians until he trusted in Jesus. Afterwards he wrote two-thirds of the New Testament. God forgave Paul and He can forgive you too.”
I saw him one more session for physical therapy and he stopped coming. A few days later, I received a message from his son that he had passed away.
Whether Leon trusted in Jesus before he died, I don’t know. Only the Lord knows. But I do know that I’m glad we that awkward conversation that helped push him towards God. If only for love.
We never know when our last day will be on this earth, and we need to reach out to others with the Gospel message of trusting in Jesus alone for salvation. “He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge … which stood against us and condemned us,” (Colossians 2:13-14).
Born again Christian that loves to inspire others to know the Lord, share the Gospel, and walk in faith. I'm a physical therapist and I take care of my ninety-three year old cute mom. I love teaching Bible studies, going on missions trips, exercising, and writing. Blog: joyluke157.wordpress.com
