8 Reasons Why You Should Pray As A Child Of God

by Ngozi Nwoke

What can prayer do in the life of a new believer in Christ? The place of prayer in the life of a child of God cannot be over-emphasized. This is because it's the live-wire of a Christian. For you need an open line to reach your Father at any time and anywhere. This post gives you 8 reasons why you should pray as a child of God

But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

- Matthew 6:6 (NKJV, emphasis is mine).

Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.

- Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV).

Pray without ceasing.

- I Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV).

Introduction

Prayer is a channel of communication with the Father and not optional for any child of God. This, we can deduce from Christ's instructions to the disciples in Matthew 6:6. For He said to them, "when you pray", not "if you pray". As such, it's expected for every believing Christian to pray. And Paul even admonished that we should pray without ceasing. Furthermore, God encouraged us to pray to Him, for He has great and mighty things to share with us. Therefore, the place of prayer in the life of a child of God is paramount to his or her growth. And it's important for his or her success in the kingdom.

8 Reasons Why You Should Pray As A Child Of God

1. Fellowship

Every parent desires to fellowship with the children and so does God the Father. This we see in the book of Genesis, where He would go down to fellowship with Adam and Eve. Truly, the Lord desires to fellowship with us that He may give us His nature and His great blessings. Also, in His presence, there is fullness of joy and at His right hand pleasures forevermore. So, when you pray, you get to talk to God as you would your earthly father.

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"

- Genesis 3:8-9 (NKJV).

2. Instruction

In prayers, you also get instructions from God on what you're to do. This ensures that you don't run on another man's track. For instance, Peter was praying when God instructed him not to reject the Gentiles before the men sent by Cornelius got to the house. So, there is no guesswork when you hear directly from God.

The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. And a voice spoke to him again the second time, "What God has cleansed you must not call common." This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.

- Acts 10:9, 15-16 (NKJV).

3. Direction

It's one thing to know what God wants you to do, and it's another thing to know how to go about it. So, in prayers, you get the details of how to do your work. Also, you get to know which way to go for anything. This ensures you don't miss God's way or your path of destiny. The good news is that the Father desires to show us the way. However, you hear Him through prayers.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.

- Psalms 32:8 (NKJV).

4. Empowerment

The scripture says that iron sharpens iron. So, as you dwell in God's presence, He sharpens you; thereby empowering you to overcome sin and all the attacks of the enemy. Also, you're empowered to boldly stand for the truth and to share the gospel of Christ with others. Again, in prayers, you're empowered to do exploits. For example, Elijah in prayer was able to stop rain from falling for three and half years, and in prayer, he called down rain again. Awesome! Glory to God!

As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

- Proverbs 27:17 (NKJV).

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

- James 5:17-18 (NKJV).

5. Answered Prayers

In prayers, you make your requests known to God. And if you pray according to His will, He grants you your petitions. Therefore, prayer is a channel by which you receive the desires of your heart. Again, the Lord Himself said you should ask and you will receive. And it's in prayer that you ask to receive from the Father.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

- Philippians 4:6,

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

- 1 John 5:14-15,

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you

- Matthew 7:7

6. Protection

Furthermore, divine protection is sure when you dwell in the Father's presence. In prayers, you fortify yourself against all the darts of the wicked. Also, in the Lord's presence, your fears dissolve, and fear of what man will do to you disappears.

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.

- Psalm 91:1-3

7. Build Up Your Faith

Your faith is also built up as you pray. This is because the scripture says that we build up our faith as we pray in the spirit. And as a child of God, you live by faith. So, prayer enables you to effectively build up your faith and live strong.

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit

- Jude 20

8. Gratitude

After, the great acts of God in your life, it's important that you return to give Him thanks. This you do in prayers. And as you thank the Lord for what He did, you cause Him to do more for you. An example is when the Samaritan returned to give Christ thanks for healing him and Jesus made him whole.

And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan...And He said to him, "Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well."

- Luke 17:15-16, 19

Conclusion

A praying Christian is a powerful Christian, which means that a non-praying Christian is a powerless Christian. This is so because prayer increases the fire of God upon you marking you a terror in the kingdom of darkness. Remember that your fight is not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers. Therefore, the place of prayer in the life of a child of God is very vital if he or she is to defeat the enemy and soar above the adversaries.
