Christianity Misconstrued

by Olawale Ogunsola
3/11/2021 / Christian Apologetics

The word Christianity emanated from the word Christian. These two words derived their existence from the name of Jesus Christ. These two words never existed during the earthly ministration of Jesus Christ. It was after His departure to be with His Father that they emerged.

How?

During His living among men, all that He had was disciples. He did not come to set up a religion to add to existing ones. He did not come into the world to build structures to be named after Him. However, He came to build men who would carry on the work of salvation of souls after His return to His father. He assembled and taught people who would observe all His doctrines without exception.

Those who followed Him lived like Him and people could see them as images of Christ. They thought, talked and walked like Him and people could see iit.
"... And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch" Acts 11:26.

Since that time, the way of life of Christians that resembled that of Jesus Christ has been tagged "Christianity". When mankind was looking for a way of classifying it they found religion as the best category to put it. So, as from that time, it has always been grouped with all other religions of the world. That is why, people do not see the core purpose of Christianity as being compulsory but voluntary. What is this core purpose? Salvation it is!

It is sad that many people within and outside the church these days do not understand the essence of birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Angel Gabriel told Joseph, the husband of Mary,
"And she will bring forth a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Matt 1:21.

So, anyone who fails to realise this truth will at anytime misconstrue what Christianity is all about. They will surely misinterpret it in one way or the other.

Christianity is misconstrued to mean having the largest assembly of people or belonging to such assembly. What is the essence of having an assembly of a large number of people who are not saved? This has become membership of a society only and not an assembly of Saints or disciples of Christ. In such an assembly, the Holy Spirit may not manifest His presence in any form. Yet, they will claim that they are Christians who do the bidding of their Master, Jesus Christ.

Another way of misconstruing Christianity is to misinterprete it to mean riches acquired. This is not a right interpretation of Christianity. Some people in an assembly in the name of Jesus Christ who are not saved even brag of their wealth and riches. Display of affluence and opulence is not in any way synonymous with Christianity. Let me reiterate it here that there are people who do not know Christ and are rich.

You do not come to Jesus Christ because you want to be rich. You can be elevated by God for many other reasons. It is not good if you are not saved.

"Thus says the Lord to His anointed, To Cyrus, whose right hand I have held
I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden riches of secret places... though you have not known Me." Isaiah 45:1-4

Let me also emphasise here that Christianity is not synonymous with poverty. That you are saved does not exclude your name from the list of those who can be blessed with wealth and riches. You can be saved from your sins and enjoy the blessings of the Lord without becoming proud or possessed or obsessed by it. You will then realise and honour the One who gave you the power to be wealthy or rich. Zech 4:6.

Never have the impression that holiness and poverty are the same. What matters most is the salvation of your soul as well as your obedience to the whole commandments of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you follow the whole of His instructions, He will provide your needs as you ask Him. Matt 6:9-11. Note verse eleven well. Your daily bread is guaranteed. You can be given more than your daily need so that you can be a channel of blessing to others in your generation. Anytime you have more than enough, be convinced that you must channel it to others who are in need. Do not misconstrue Christianity to mean a liscense to live a poor life because you want to go to paradise.

Beloved, for you not to become a victim of misinterpretation of Christianity, be closer to your Holy Bible and meditate in it day and night and you will act according to its contents to please your Creator. Jos 1:7-9.

Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
