A Mixed Multitudes

"Then the children of Israel journeyed from Ramses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides, children. A mixed multitude went up with them also, and..." Exodus 12:37-38.

 

In the journey of life, one cannot be but come across people of various and different background. It takes God's support and wisdom to deal with them. As it is with individuals, so it is with entities and group of people.

 

The children of Israel were in bondage in the land of Egypt for four hundred and thirty years.

 

One day, their liberation took place and they were set free with might hand of the Lord of their fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They were under direct control of their God through Prophet Moses and his brother, Aaron.

 

By the time they were set free by the power that be in Egypt, seeing the great deliverance with which they were delivered, people of different tribes and languages joined them on the journey to the promised land. This are called, "A mixed multitude."

Although the children of Israel were stiff-necked, this was well known to God of their fathers and the servant of God ; Moses and Aaron, his brother. They saw wonderful works of God many times but still could not totally believe and trust Him for everything. Read the Scriptural declaration by God in Numbers 14:22-23.
"because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness and had put Me to the test now these ten times and have not heeded My voice, they certainly shall not see the land of which I sware to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it. "

 

One salient truth is that the roles of a Mixed multitude among them cannot be overstressed.

 

A mixed multitude must have made their contribution to the rebellion against God. After all, they had their idols in whom they believed and put their trust. So anytime there is any lack, a mixed multitude must have introduced a fellowship with their idols who could not help them. These were the undoing of the Hebrews who were not allowed to see the good land flowing with milk and honey promised their fathers.

 

A mixed multitude left the land of Egypt but their idols remain steadfast in their hearts. Their gods did not leave them. Certain of them must have carried symbols of their gods with them. So as soon as there is a need, such people easily complain and murmur together with the Hebrews. I think that certain of the mixed multitude must have become instigators who encourage Hebrews to doubt their living God with words like,
'We think your God could do more than what He has done not knowing that He is also limited in power.' This group of people will easily change their thoughts as soon as their needs were met by Almighty God of Abraham.

 

Do you know that King Solomon of Israel had his own share of experience as far as a mixed multitude is concerned?

 

How?

 

I King 11:1-12 contains the details. It reads in part, "But king Solomon loved many foreign women (a mixed multitude)... Solomon clung to these in love. And he had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines and his wives turned away his heart. For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father, David. "

 

Do you know (think) that the trouble with Solomon was not the one thousand women? The problem emanated from their being foreigners (a mixed multitude). Maybe if they have been married from among the Hebrew women his heart would have remained with the Lord God of Israel. After all His father had so many wives and his heart remained loyal until the end of his life.

 

Beloved wherever you are, beware of mixed multitude and their opinions. The Scriptures states, "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil, neither shall thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment." Exodus 23:2.(KJV) Kings James Version.
