When God Doesn't Make Sense
by Tonja Taylor

Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord. --Luke 1:45
(This was written about 10 years ago.)
The other day I was listening to the radio and heard a statement that has made me think about it for days now. The statement was, "God makes sense even when He doesn't make sense and that's why we should have faith." While I am sure there was a point to this statement that I missed, I want to talk about this, if I may.
I beg to differ. There have been more times in my life when God didn't make any sense at all. There have been so many times that I didn't understand why I had to go that way, why God would lead me that way.
There have been many times the LORD has had me to apologize to people that have done me very, very wrong, when it was not me that caused or exacerbated the trouble--and when there was no inkling of them ever apologizing to me!
There have been times when I didn't understand what was going on because it was totally going against what the Word said - and I could make no sense of it at all.
I used to ask 'why' but I stopped doing that. I never received an answer to that question and it always reminded me of when I would ask my Mom way and she would say 'because I said so.' It was that simple - because she said so. It is the same with God, it's simple, and you don't have to understand it, or agree with it, you simply have to choose to obey Him anyway. That's what faith is.
Faith is not about trusting God when you can understand what He is doing. Faith is about trusting Him when you can't see the way at all. Faith is about trusting when the road is dark and you see no light at the end of the tunnel. Let me share some of the God kind of faith with you today:
Faith, like Abraham had, caused him to leave his home and travel to a land that he only heard about. He had not seen it and he had no family or friends there; he went simply because God said 'go' he didn't ask why, where, or when. He just obeyed and went.
The faith he had believed God when God said I have made you the father of many nations. This man of faith believed it to the point that when God said sacrifice--he did--without hesitation and without question.
Ah, the faith of Abraham. We find it so easy to hear an awesome Word from God, we are all for that - but when God says 'now sacrifice that thing I have given you' we stumble. Our faith falters.
Yet, in these last days we are going to again witness people of God walking on this earth with the God kind of faith. Faith that doesn't falter - no matter what.
It's easy to have faith when you see what you have asked for - it's not as easy when it is only a promise. When it is only something on the inside of you, waiting to be born. As it was with Mary.
She was told that she would give birth to the Savior. She had never been with a man, how could this thing be? Yet she said 'nevertheless, at Thy Word - let it be done unto me.' What faith! Luke 1:45 calls her blessed because she believed what was told to her of the Lord.
She was blessed for one reason, she believed. She didn't understand, it made no sense at all. But she believed.
David believed he was a man with a covenant and Goliath was a man without one--so with a stone, he took down his enemy. That makes no sense at all.
Moses led the children of Israel across a Red Sea with water on both sides of them; they walked across on dry land. Then, minutes later, the enemy was destroyed in the same place they just walked; that makes no sense at all--except that, God is faithful, and always has a Plan, no matter what it looks like!
He always has a Plan for our good! (Genesis 50:20, Romans 8:28, Jeremiah 29:11)
So, I have to disagree with that statement; sometimes God and His ways makes no sense at all. Yet, I trust Him. I believe He will do exactly what He said He would do.
How about you? How is your faith? Do you falter when it makes no sense? Do you have trouble stepping out in faith when you can't see the next step? Let me share a scripture with you from the Message Bible:
Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don't drift along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it. (II Cor. 13:5)
Today, take a faith test. Do you believe God without seeing the promise? Do you believe Him when it makes no sense?
As many ministers have stated, you can have doubt in your head and faith in your heart.
The Bible says Abraham was fully convinced that God would do everything He said He would. Are you? If you are fully persuaded, if you believe before you see, then you, like Mary, are blessed and empowered to prosper.
Don't wait on God to make sense. Trust Him, and step out on the water. He won't fail you and every single word He speaks will and has already come to pass.
And if you don't pass the faith test, do something about it. Ask God to help you increase your faith. Ask Him to develop the faith of God Himself, in you. He will answer that prayer. He always does.
When God doesn't make sense, trust Him anyway.
