HALF-N-HALF

My father fed me milk,
My mother poured me cream;
My mother's touch was silk,
My father's eye, a beam.

My father called me son,
My mother called me knave;
My mother's love I won,
My father's love I gave.

My father took me riding,
My mother took my hand;
My mother gave me hiding,
My father gave me land.

My father filled my inner strength,
My mother taught me humor;
My mother bred my wired length,
My father, a festered tumor.

But such they are my half, my whole,
For such as they have given;
For half and half I am all tol',
And half and half I'm livin'.
