PRAYERS FOR A TIME SUCH AS THIS: PSALM 90 & 91:
by linzy bruno
4/24/2020 / Prayers
PSALM 90
Summary--
Written during Israel's captivity in Babylon; this chapter records Moses' fear and acknowledgment of the One True God of Abraham. These are his prayers, also referred to as songs. He used them to implore the Lord, as well as bring comfort to himself and his people. Israel had been wandering around in the wilderness for the past 38 years, but Moses is praising and imploring God on behalf of himself and his people, for they were awakened unto the truth and fear of the Lord. According to the words of Moses, his people are ready for complete surrender.
Moreover, Revelation 15:3 parrots or summarizes the songs recorded in Exodus 15 and these parallel the aforementioned Psalms:
" They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying:
“Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the saints!"
(These parallels reflect and validate the authenticity of Scripture and demonstrate the continuity therein.)
VERSE BREAKDOWN
V.1-2). Moses is praising the One True God of Abraham, WHO IS, WAS and WILL BE Lord over the lives of the Israelites. He is rededicating himself and his people to God and by these means, comforting himself and his people. This is referencing a return to the Lord, as Israel had been in rebellion.
V.3). Here, Moses acknowledges God's Sovereignty. God's Mercy can be described as Israel's lifeline, as He repeatedly forgives them and pours out His Mercy upon them, while Israel continues to struggle to avoid the inherent temptation to return to their Egyptian upbringing which says to worship idols rather than the One True God. (Prior to this, Israel rebelled through complaining against God to Moses in Exodus 14).
V.4-6). Moses realizes God is outside of time. He is expressing the awesomeness of God and His unsearchable qualities of AWE. He humbles himself before God and considers the weakness and frailty of man.
V.7-11). Moses rapples with the fear of the Lord and the realization that HE WILL have His Way, so he submits himself and his people righteously to the unquestionable Sentence of God. God will do as He pleases. This brings both comfort, as well as fear. This parallels a teaching by Paul, in Romans 9:21:
"Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?"
Furthermore, there are parallels to this verse in Isaiah 45:9 & 64:8, Jere.18:6 and 2Timothy 2:20.
V.12-17). Moses implores God for His Favor over Israel. He begs God to show him and his people how to exchange their old ways of the Egyptians for His Ways and that includes the trades they would then choose; those in line with God's Will, rather than theirs.
PSALM 90
"1).Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
2).Before the mountains were brought forth,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
3).You turn man to destruction,
And say, “Return, O children of men.”
4).For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
5).You carry them away like a flood;
They are like a sleep.
6).In the morning they are like grass which grows up:
In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.
7).For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
8).You have set our iniquities before You,
Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
9).For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10).The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11).Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12).So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13).Return, O Lord!
How long?
And have compassion on Your servants.
14).Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
15).Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,
The years in which we have seen evil.
16).Let Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
17).And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands."
Summary--
This chapter glorifies and praises the Lord for His Providence over Israel. Now, at long last Israel can rest in the knowledge that the Lord's covering is indeed over them, as well as their descendants, for they have returned to the Lord in complete loving surrender. The entire 16 verses of this chapter thankfully lift God up in glory and express what true security really means. He alone is able to provide them cover and keep them safe from PESTILENCE, which is mentioned in verses 3 and 6 and EVIL in verses 7-10. Verses 11-13 proclaim the cover of His guardian angels and verses 14-16 quote the very Words of Promise from the Lord Himself.
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2).I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
3).Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
4).He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5).You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6).Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7).A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
8).Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
9).Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10).No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11).For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12).In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13).You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15).He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16).With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”"
To simply say "everything's gonna be alright" is as naive as it is dangerous. BUT, we do NOT have to be afraid, in fact, we have no reason to be if we believe and abide in the promises in these Psalms, however, we do need to be diligent in all godliness and put on every defense we have against the evil that is overcoming the whole world. (Everything will be alright in the sense that God has a rescue plan, not in the sense of everything going back to normal.)
So I pray we all hang onto the promise of God's Protection. He has promised the RAPTURE for the TRUE Church of God, which is where we can and should derive our hope!
BEST DEPICTIONS OF THE RAPTURE:
AND 1Corinthians 15:51-54:
"Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”"
MAY GOD BLESS US ONE AND ALL!
