Anhel DeDios
by Tonja Taylor
3/04/2020 / Short Stories
I'm walking down the hall of our current home, and my husband is on the couch. I can see his car parked on the concrete, through the open window shade.
I see some strange men walk up to the car and look at it, and actually open the door.
I'm irritated, for there is not a "For Sale" sign on it, nor is it parked in a way to indicate that, even though I live on a corner by a busy street, it is available to buy.
I walk outside and tell them it's not for sale, and my husband walks out to tell them the same. They laugh and insist that it is for sale, in a rough, foreign accent that reminds me of movies where men in the Maffia tyrranized others.
The men look like they are in the mob; they are all wearing shades and very expensive suits.
The car is just an ordinary Toyota; nothing special, except that it's our car, and it's paid for.
None of the neighbors who live close by seem to notice these unwelcome visitors in our yard, and we have no idea why such men would be interested in our car.
My mind is racing, and I'm thinking, was this car (that we bought from a used car dealer) formerly used in some covert, sinful operations, such as drug trafficking or something? Or even worse?
I tell the men that the car is not for sale. My husband nods.
The men start talking rougher, insisting that the car is for sale, and implying strongly that "the sale"' will be without them paying for it.
In other words, they are telling me that they will be taking the car against my will.
I'm sure that, inside my heart and under my breath at least, I am taking dominion in the name of Jesus over this very wrong situation, although in the dream, I don't remember speaking my authority by the Blood of the Lamb out loud.
Suddenly, a large, strong-looking man I have never seen appears at the edge of my driveway. He must have walked up while I was talking to the other men, I think. He is also wearing shades and a suit, but his looks even more expensive than the evil men's.
My husband doesn't say anything to him, and neither do I.
This new man looks and sounds like they do. However, he seems to be very powerful and confident, but he doesn't make me feel uncomfortable, only curious.
The men who have been bothering us stare at this new man, and try to ignore him at first. I see one of them look up and down the street, as if he thinks there might be more.
The new man walks toward them. He is taller than they are by a head, at least.
First, he turns to us and greets us by name, loudly and warmly.
My husband and I are shocked. We have no idea who this man is, and my mind is racing, wondering if this is all an evil set up. But again, the new bigger man does not make me feel uncomfortable.
"Oh, I am Anhel DeDios," he says, as if reading our thoughts.
Hmmm, I think. That sounds vaguely familiar.
Then the new man starts talking to the men that were bothering us the same way they have been talking to my husband and me--in a threatening way that is "politely" stated.
He speaks in a Maffia-type accent and attitude. "Whadya doin' here, boys? Are you bothering my friends?! Now surely you are smarter than that!"
The men start to look extremely uncomfortable. One man even pulls back his jacket to expose his pistol.
My husband and I freeze, but the new man continues and starts talking louder to the unwelcome men. As he talks, he starts getting taller!
Ah! His name is Spanish, I think. Now I understand!
I am sure that the bad men's eyes are bugging out behind their shades.
Meanwhile, our friend the new man continues to speak. "I just need to let you know that this car is not for sale and it is time for you boys to disappear--one way or another--and never show your ugly faces here again!"
While he is speaking, Anhel DeDios grows another foot taller, and--as I gaze at him in shock--another foot wider!
I am laughing inside as I watch our new friend work.
The bad men, who'd moved closer to each other, now seem frozen and unable to speak.
Finally, one of the men says, sounding scared, "Huh. Wrong house. We'll go next door. C'mon, boys!"
They take a step, and suddenly, Anhel DeDios is right in front of them--as wide as the four of them together are!
"Not," says the new man, getting yet another foot taller, "until you apologize to my friends. NOW!"
"No way!" said the leader of the bad men, but his voice trembled.
"Okay," said our friend the new man. "Your choice, Time for you to disappear the hard way---" and he reached out his huge hand toward the evil guy's neck.
The leader suddenly dropped to his knees and started crying like a baby. "All right! I apologize! Please don't choke me!"'
The rest of the men stared a bit, in even more shock, then dropped to their knees too. All were begging.
I laughed inside as I watched our new friend work.
"Get out of here, now! And never come back!" said Anhel DeDios--the Angel of God.
And they did! (But of course!)
