What is a True Friend?

by Tonja Taylor
2/20/2020 / Christian Living

A friend is a gift from God. If you are close friends with someone, you are “intimate” with them—you know how they act and think and believe. If you are their best friend, you know them better than anyone else!

Jesus Who is God is Himself your very best friend! He knows you much better than even your parents know you. He created you! You are very special to Him and He has great plans—a wonderful life!—for you! When you trust Him and live to please Him, He calls you His friend, just like He did Abraham!

And the holy Writings were put into effect which said, And Abraham had faith (trust) in God and it was put to his account as righteousness (acceptance and right standing with God); and he was named the friend of God. James 2:23

For the wrong-hearted man is hated by the LORD, but He is a Friend to the upright. Proverbs 3:32

It is one of the very best gifts in the world to have a friend who truly loves you. Jesus Chist is the Spiriit of Truth (John 14:6); He is the One Who loves you the most, with an everlasting Love (Jeremiah 31:3, Matthew 28:20, John 3:16).

Friends who truly love each other do things for each other. Below is a list of seven of these things:

  1. Love and delight (find great joy and happiness) in each other, and a big part of Love is truly listening to the other and helping them believe in the goodness of God, and that He will help them do what they are called to do in His wonderful Ephesians 2:10 Plan for life.

  2. Are themselves; (don’t try to act like someone else) around each other.

  3. Share and keep secrets (things that make them sad, angry, and glad) with each other, but don’t tell anyone else.

He who keeps secret the secret of his friend, will get himself a name for good faith. Proverbs 27:16

     4. Always trust (believe that their friend tells them the truth) each other.

The wounds of a friend are given in good faith, but the kisses of a hater are false. Proverbs 27:6

      5. Are faithful (are always dependable—there to help each other) to each   other.

A friend is loving at all times, and becomes a brother in times of trouble. Proverbs 17:17

      6. Do special things (like saying, “I love you!” and speaking other sweet words of encouragement, or giving gifts that you know they’ll like, or spending time doing things they like, or learning more about God with them) for each other.

Iron makes iron sharp; so a man makes sharp his friend. Proverbs 27:17

      7. Speak the best (words that make them feel good, like bragging on their talents and skills, and help them realize how much God loves them) to and about them. Speaking the best about them includes praying for them—speaking about them to God!

Oil and perfume make glad the heart, and the wise suggestion of a friend is sweet to the soul. Proverbs 27:9

Did you know that Jesus your Best Friend has written a love letter to you (the Holy Bible) to tell you how much He loves you and wants to help you have the very best life. As you read, He (Jesus, the Spirit of Truth Who leads us into all truth as we seek Him) will help you understand what He is saying to you, for the Bible is a living Book. You will enjoy spending time with Him, your Best Friend!

He chose you before He created the world to be a forever friend to Him by sending His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross. When you believe that Jesus died for you and rose again to forgive you of all you’ve done wrong, Jesus, God’s Son, will come into your heart and be your very Best Friend!

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may be without sin. And if any man is a sinner, we have a friend and helper with the Father, Jesus Christ, the upright one. 1 John 2:1

That’s right, you’re very Best Friend will live inside you so you can talk to Him all the time—any time of day or night! He loves you so much that He wants to be with you all the time, and as close as He can—and that is inside your heart (your spirit)!

Tell Jesus your Best Friend that you want to know Him better. He’ll help you!
