That Fly on the Wall

At age 17...wish I knew then what I know now. At age 39...I knew a little bit more.

And now that I’m older I know a whole lot more...and I can say with certainty that there is always a fly on the wall that not only hears what I’m saying, but also knows what I’m thinking. The fact that it accompanies me wherever I go presents a huge problem. I can’t swat it or spray it with pesticide. It just won’t go away.

What is more, that darn fly records everything and forgets nothing. It then goes about spreading the news in an attempt to get me into trouble.

The surprising thing is, that fly has been with me ever since I was conceived. I never realised it until I was much older. Actually, it does not present such a big problem anymore. I’ve learned to take it by the scruff of the neck and keep it under control most of the time, but it remains a determined bugging device that will stay with me for life and try and trip me up.

Thank goodness I’m not alone. I know for a fact that every person in the world has a fly of their own that simply won’t leave them alone.

What am I talking about? I’m talking about my inner being, the heart of my being – my spirit, the proverbial fly on the wall of my life. And I know for a fact that it has been with me since the moment I was conceived. “The burden of the word of the Lord for Israel, saith the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.” (Zech 12:1)

Did you know that everything you think and say is recorded in your spirit, by your spirit? What happens to it then? It is filed away in the filing cabinet of your spirit. This filing cabinet is referred to as your soul, the capacity of which grows and grows as the years go by. In effect, it is the place that identifies your personality/character as a human being. You possess no knowledge other than what is in your soul. The more you learn (all the new the information you absorb through your senses on a daily basis) the more knowledge you’ll have on hand to process and use in your family and business environment.

Your spirit also has a mind, which plays the role of chief executive officer of your heart. It is actually your mind – under the power of your spirit – that does all the deliberation (thinking) and decision making and then instantaneously executes the end product through your mouth and into the ears of whoever is within hearing distance.

By the way, your brain has absolutely nothing to do with what you think or say. It is the mind of your spirit that instructs the physical part of you (in this case, your brain) to get those electrical pulses racing in the brain to shape the words in your vocal cords, roll them over your tongue and express them through your lips. To reiterate, it is the mind of your spirit that does the thinking and the talking. Your brain merely amplifies the sound of those words.

You (your mind) can control the output through your lips by renewed thinking. In other words, think carefully before you speak. Here’s some solid advice. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” (Romans 12:2,3)

Bearing in mind that your spirit is like a fly on the wall, recording and storing everything your mind conjures up through word and deed, think soberly, think twice before shooting from the hip. Why? Because, “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” (Matt 12:35-37)

The “good treasure of the heart” is made up of those good things stored in the soul and which the mind extracts for deliberation and execution. Obviously, the evil things would be just the opposite. It is all up to you – your mind.

Idle words can be considered to be senseless and extended chatter about insignificant events and occurrences that those with renewed minds find absolutely boring.

What your mind executes through your mouth can either be harmful or uplifting to those at the hearing end. Dig deep before you speak.

May your fly on the wall (your spirit) find nothing but good things to record and report to your Maker when the time comes for the judgment of your soul.
