The Power of Blessing Your Children
by Tonja Taylor
12/31/2019 / Family
One day I forgot to bless my daughter. I was rushing down the road to get her to the sitter's before work, and she looked at me, took my right hand gently off the steering wheel (My left hand drove), and placed it on her five-year-old head. "Bless me, Mama!" she said.
So I did. And she loved it. And I've never forgotten since.
Are you blessing your children? Do you realize the significance of this simple act? Would you like to know how to bless your darlings and make an eternal difference in their lives?
"Bless" means 1. to consecrate or sanctify by a religious rite. 2. to request of God the bestowal of divine favor on (Bless this house) 3. to bestow good of any kind upon: a nation blessed with peace.) 4. to protect or guard from evil (usually used interjectionally)--Bless you!).
Blessing your children is priceless, powerful, and easier than you may think. You'll find it a pleasant habit that will quickly become a delight to you and your offspring, one that will enhance their spiritual stability and sense of heritage.
The saints of old knew the power of the blessing of a parent. Usually the blessing came from the father, the spiritual leader of the family. But the mother also has great authority, and if she is single, then she is the most powerful authority in her child's life.
"Blessing," according to Webster's dictionary, means many things, but I will focus on meaning #4: "The invocation of God's favor upon a person."
There is nothing archaic (nor magic; it is the power of God, Who used words to speak the world into existence!) about saying a blessing over your children. You actually do it every day when you say, "God bless you!" and "I love you!" and "You are so special" or "You are really good at that!" There is great power in the words we speak--much more so than we usually give them credit for, even as believers!
People God wrote about in the Bible knew that blessings spoken over their children would serve as catalysts for positive things to happen in their lives. A blessing was a very special thing! It still is.
Blessings, often prophetic, (were understood to be so powerful that some Bible characters even schemed to steal them! In the Bible, Rebekah urged her son Jacob to pretend to be Esau, his older brother, to deceive their father Isaac and get his blessing. Isaac, who was dying and losing his eyesight was deceived, and when Esau returned home from hunting, Jacob had taken not only his birthright (land, wealth, possessions, which rightfully belonged to the firstborn son) but his blessing as well:
I bless my daughter every day, even on the phone if she's elsewhere, with these words--a series of Bible verses God gave me before she was born, including Philippians 1:9:
"I love you, and this pray for you: That your love may abound more and more, in knowledge and all discernment; that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be pure and without offense to the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. And may God Himself sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless till the day of our Lord Jesus Christ; He is faithful, and He will do it.
May He give you the desire of your heart, and make all your plans succeed; may the Lord grant all your requests (Psalms 20: 4,5b). May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord turn His face to you and be gracious to you; May the Lord lift up His face to you and give you peace." (Num. 6:24-26)
Psalm 20:1-5: "May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! may the name of the God of Jacob set you up on high (and defend you); Send you help from the sanctuary and support, refresh, and strengthen you from Zion; Remember all your offerings and accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah (pause, and think of that)! May He rant you according to your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans. We will (shout in) triumph at your salvation and victory, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners. May the Lord fulfill all your plans."
Ask the LORD to help you search the Scriptures to find more verses that He specifically wants you to speak over your child(ren). You will never go wrong learning more about the Word and utilizing its eternal power to shape your kids for Christ!
