Living Experiences with God

by Joseph LaValley

What’s better, a description of a chocolate ice cream cone or eating one? (Those who are lactose intolerant, insert your own goodie). You’re probably saying, eating that delicious ice cream cone wins hands down. Likewise, experiencing the realities of God is far better than merely hearing about them.

It goes without saying, that you must know the truth before you can experience it. God knows this is a given, so He gave us a written word, the Bible, whereby we can acquire knowledge.

2 Timothy 3:16 KJV

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

The word scripture is translated from the Greek word “graphe” which means the writings. The scriptures are the words of God dictated to men who walked with him. One of the major things His word tell us is how to walk with Him, so that we may experience what His words promise.

John 8:31-32 KJV

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

And ye shall know [Gr. ginosko] the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The Greek word ginosko in this context is speaking about knowing by experience. Jesus Christ said that as you continue walking my word, you will experience freedom mentally, physically, and certainly spiritually. This most assuredly will involve deliverances, growth and other good changes. This isn’t mere rhetoric, it is His promise that things will change in your life for the good. You’ll taste and see that the Lord is good!

You can see by Jesus Christ’s statement that the purpose of God’s word is to impart “life” not merely acquire theological knowledge! We are not called to be theologians, we are called to be believers. You may have a gifting that entails Biblical research that can be ministered to the body of Christ. But make no mistake, the purpose of every true gifting is to help people become more Christ like which translates into deliverances and changes wrought. In other words, you are to have living experiences with your living God. That is why Christ came.

Ephesians 4:15-16 KJV

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head even Christ:

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Verse sixteen is a mouthful. Simply put, each member in the body of Christ, when carrying out their ministry, causes change in those members who receive it. We are not merely talking about a growing Bible study but the growth of the members themselves. Church growth isn’t solely known by a head count but more so by life changes. This is God’s desire and plan that is being worked out through Christ.

He desires that we manifest salvation wholeness in all areas of our lives all the days of our lives. Salvation certainly is an all-inclusive reality that God desires for you to experience now and later!  God desires that you experience healing, prosperity, an impacting ministry and more.

1 Timothy 2:4 KJV

Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

The “who” in this verse is God. He desires that every human being receive salvation. His second desire is made clear by the Greek word for “knowledge”. It is the Greek word “epignosis” which means a clear and exact knowledge that has a strong influence on the knower. God desires that you to acquire an exact knowledge of His written word as well as His spoken will for your life and then experience it- Taste the ice cream!

Remember This-God doesn’t desire something for people without committing Himself to its fulfillment. He doesn’t step back and say “I’ve paid for your wholeness in Christ, so now you are on your own.” No, no. Not our Abba.  He’s involved in our lives on all levels. He releases blessings from the spirit realm and then commits Himself to energizing them into the physical realm.

Ephesians 1:3 KJV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us withal spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that spiritual blessings are merely good intentioned promises. Spirit has substance, not material substance but substance nonetheless. Every good thing that exists began in God, who is spirit.  Through Christ He has released all that we need to live life more abundantly.  He then calls us into a living relationship so that He may bring those good things into the physical through our cooperation.

Philippians 2:12 KJV

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Certainly, the phrase “work out” isn’t talking about earning your salvation. The book of Philippians is written to born again believers-( Philippians 1:1 …to all the saints in Christ Jesus…). Verse twelve is talking about demonstrating, manifesting your salvation wholeness. We are to walk out our salvation with awe and respect (fear and trembling), manifesting the reality.  The next verse tells us why and how, and also gets rid of the excuses when it is believed:

Philippians 2: 13 KJV

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

The word “worketh” in the above verse means to energize an effect in you. In this verse there are two effects energized. The first effect is the Greek word for “to will” which is ‘thelo’ which means desire. God by His spirit will encourage you, as His child, to desire and seek a certain thing or direction.

The second effect is contained in the Greek word “to do” which is ‘energeo’ meaning to put forth power. As you obey the desires that God drops into your spirit it is He who will bring them to pass by His power. You can see here God’s desire, as well as His involvement, to lead you into experiencing your salvation.

“True prosperity” isn’t merely money, but all the fulness of your salvation being manifested. This is what prosper literal means in 3 John 2 KJV where John declares “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper…”. “Mayest prosper” is the Greek word ‘euodoo’ which means to be lead in a good way. The good way of being lead isn’t by the flesh but by the Spirit. Trust God above human reasoning. Get His leading then surely you will have His energizing.

Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

How do we acknowledge him in all our ways? First find out what His word, the Bible says. Use His word for clarity on any issue. Then for the specifics, pray with faith for His leading. Be patient and don’t back down on your confidence in His integrity and His goodness.

We all know that life is something to be lived, not merely something you read about. When Jesus Christ said in John 10:10b KJV-…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. He surely didn’t lie, and He will surely lead you into it.

It was 1973, I was an excited, young believer. God had delivered me from heroin addiction in a moment of time.  That’s the sort of experience that will surely grab one’s attention!  I certainly wanted to know more about this gracious God, so I went to these home groups as often as they had them.

One of the first things that the Lord placed in my heart was to learn about speaking in tongues. I heard others speak in tongues and God peaked my desire to learn about it. Prior to this point I had ignored this reality but now God placed this desire in my heart. I was given enough scripture to see what it was, what its benefit was and what my responsibility of faith was.

Acts 2:4 tell us that on the day of Pentecost, the twelve spoke as the Spirit gave the utterance. Their faith response was to willfully begin speaking with an assurance that the Spirit, the Lord, would give the words of that supernatural prayer language.

There I sat, alone, one evening ready to speak in tongues. God had put a desire in my heart and now the same God would energize the fruition of that well-placed desire. I spoke a prayer with my understanding then I began to move my lips, my tongue with the expectation of His faithfulness to give the utterance. Sure enough, I began to speak fluently in my new prayer language. Truly it was exciting.

Over the years as I have faithfully spoke in tongues in my private prayer time I have seen the supernatural changes as well as the results it has brought to my walk with the Lord. It all began with the relational truth God has spelled out in Philippians 2:13.

Philippians 2: 13 KJV

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Respond to God, and you will “taste and see that the Lord is good”!
