What is the Light of Your House?
by Jerry Ousley
5/11/2018 / Christian Living
My grandkids love the light. Whenever they stay with me if entering a room requires entering a dark room then it is a mandate that I go with them and go first. Darkness can be scary because our eyes are made to see light. When we can’t see then we get a bit concerned.
On several instances I have gone on guided cave tours. The one thing that seems to be a common practice is to take a group into a cave and then for a moment shut off all the lights. You never experienced darkness to the degree you do in a cave where no light enters. You literally cannot see your hand in front of your face. When light is taken away our eyes become useless. That’s why many species of cave fish don’t have eyes or are blind. Eyes are useless in a completely dark cavern.
The house we are building requires good lighting sources inside. Of course when we build a physical house the electric wiring must be put in before dry wall and wall coverings. The wiring supplies power to the lights and electrical outlets. But our spiritual house is illuminated differently. It requires that we are powered by Jesus Christ by way of the Holy Spirit in us.
Jesus said this in John 9:4-5: “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” In the days of Jesus work was not done after dark because of the lack of light. There were no electric lights and so no second and third shift jobs were done (unless one was watching sheep at night). If work was to be done haste was made to complete it while it was day. This said, Jesus was speaking of doing what He had to do while the day existed. Even then the Pharisees and Jewish leaders were plotting to have Him executed and this was the darkness He was talking about.
In the same way we must be working while it is day. It is important that we bring as many to Christ as we can before the darkness of the end time arrives. Working while it is day means that we get our jobs done while we still have time to do them.
Jesus then said that as long as He was in the world He was the light of the world. In figurative speech Jesus was saying that He was the truth – The illumination man needed to come to God. He is still in the world today by way of the Holy Spirit in us. Physically Jesus is seated in Heaven at the right hand of the Father. But the way He lives in us is by the Holy Spirit and He is the light in our house.
Where light shines darkness flees. Light must be extinguished before it can be overtaken by darkness. Any light shining at all will chase the darkness away. Jesus, by way of the Holy Spirit becomes the illumination of our house. If we see a house at night where no lights are on inside it looks cold and forbidding. But a house in which light floods from the windows seems, warm, inviting and friendly. So must we allow the light that flows from Jesus Christ to spill through our windows and entry ways. We must be lit up with the love of Christ. When we are, people see the difference.
There was a day when you could stand on a busy street corner and proclaim the Good News of Jesus and people would listen and some would even make a commitment to the Lord. Today if we did that people would mock, scorn and call us crazy freaks. We might even get arrested for disturbing the peace. So the most effective way to witness today is to allow people see the warm inviting light streaming from our house. I am not saying that we shouldn’t preach the Gospel because that is a mandate from Jesus Himself. However, one of the most effective ways is to live a life of love and giving to those in need. People see this and want to know why we are different from most others. Then we have our opportunity to share Christ.
Someone once said to tell the world about Jesus and if necessary use words. That sounds amusing but the reality of it is that our witness through our everyday life is our most powerful witness. Many people say things today that they don’t really mean. But when one’s life reflects love and truth then the words that come after are more effective. Let Christ fill your house with light and let it spill out from your windows and entry ways so the whole world can see!
