Christians Are Released from The Ten Commandments

by Michael Edwards
3/03/2018 / Bible Studies

The author is against all sin. I agree totally with Paul.

What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Romans 6:15 ESV

1) In Romans 7:1-12 Paul is talking about when a person dies, they are dead to, set free from, released from the law. He uses two of the Ten Commandments, the seventh commandment – adultery - and the tenth commandment – coveting - as examples, not the ceremonial law. He starts with the seventh commandment.

“Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. (Rom 7:1-3 ESV)

Using adultery as an example, Paul presents the truth that when a person dies, they are dead to, set free from, released from the law. Likewise, Christians die to the law through the body of Christ. Paul is clearly indicating that a Christian is no longer under the dominion of the entire law, including the Ten Commandments because we have been crucified with Christ. We are dead to the law that we were once married to. We now belong to Jesus.

Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code” (Rom 7:4-6 ESV).

Further down in those verses as he continues to talk about how a Christian is dead to, set free from and released from the law, he uses the tenth commandment – coveting - as an example. This further reinforces the fact that believers are no longer under the dominion of the Ten Commandments.

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead(Romans 7:7-8 ESV)

Further down, he talks about how the law killed him as he continues about coveting. This tells us the Ten Commandments are part of the law of sin and death that Jesus set us free from as Romans 8:2 states.

I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.(Rom 7:9-12 ESV)

The law of Moses, specifically a combination of the first three of the Ten Commandments, was utilized by the Jews to kill the author of the law.

The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” John 19:7 ESV

The Old Covenant law is the law of sin and death.

2) Any law that empowered sin to kill us, especially the Ten Commandments, are included in the law of sin and death that Jesus set us free from.

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death” (Rom 8:1-2).

The law is what gave sin its power to kill us.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  (1 Cor 15: 56 ESV)

For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. (Rom 6:7 NLT)

We are crucified with Christ, dead to any law that would bring condemnation.

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith (not law) in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal 2:20).

3) Additionally, in Col 2:16 the Bible tells us to let no one judge us with regards to the fourth commandment – keeping the Sabbath.  This verse also lets us know we are no longer under the ceremonial law too.

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. (Col 2:16 ESV)

It is very clear that Christians are no longer under the entire law of Moses, Ten Commandments included.

4) Those who insist a Christian is still under the dominion of the Ten Commandments are fighting to remain under the law of sin and death. The specific thing Jesus died to set us free from in Rom 8:2.

2 Corinthians 3 compares the far exceeding glory of Jesus ministry of righteousness with the Old Covenant ministry of death and condemnation, the Ten Commandments, whose glory has come to an end.

Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory. Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it. For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory. (2 Cor 3:7-11 ESV)

Do you really want to fight to remain under the Old Covenant ministry of condemnation and death? If you do, I would question your salvation. In Galatians 5:4, Paul clearly tells us that those who add the law back in to be right with God have fallen from grace and they are severed from Christ.

You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. (Gal 5:4 ESV)

To fight to remain under the Ten Commandments is to fight to remain under the curse of the law.

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. (Gal 3:10-14 ESV)

The truth is that the only place sin lies dead is apart from the law - apart from the law, sin lies dead (Rom 7:8b ESV)

5) Do the Ten Commandments still exist? Absolutely, the law is good if it is used for the purpose for which it was intended. The law will remain until all is accomplished. But the law is not for the believer. You are no longer under the law when you place your faith in Jesus.

Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, (Gal 2:23-25 ESV)

The law still exists and is good, when used properly. The law is for the unbeliever. The believer is righteous in Christ. The believer is the righteous person listed in this next verse.

But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted. (1 Tim 1:9-11 ESV)

6) God does not see the believer as the sinner or other sinner subtitles listed in those verses. God see’s the believer in the spirit, in the perfection of Jesus even when they sin.

Sin is a transgression of the law.

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (1 John 3:4 ESV)

You cannot transgress a law you are not under. Therefore, you cannot sin in God’s eyes.

For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. (Rom 4:15 ESV)

Sin is not imputed to a person’s account where there is no law.

sin is not counted where there is no law. (Rom 5:13b ESV)

then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” (Heb 10:17 ESV)

The word "sinner" is used 47 times in the New Testament and never refers to a believer.

7) God sees a believer as a saint, perfected by the blood of Christ.

God see a believer in Christ as already righteous, sanctified, holy and perfected.

God Said a Believer Can Never be Considered Unholy

Now that is really good news!
