The Holy Place

Basketball – Although I do enjoy watching a good game I am not a player.  When we were pastors there came a time that we scheduled a game between the teenage boys and the men.  It sounds like there would be no competition; certainly the men would have no trouble winning against these youngsters.  In fact we should probably take it easy on them.  But folks, I had no idea a ten minute quarter lasted three hours!  At least it seemed like it.  We were trying to play full court ball and two trips up and down the court left me winded and exhausted.  I never stood a chance!

A couple of the men were younger and stood up fairly well, which was a very good thing because the rest of us had to change out at least five or six times per quarter!  Needless to say we got sent home with our tails between our legs like a whipped puppy!  The court just proved too big for us and our sons and teenage boys proved who was in better shape!

In looking at God’s Tabernacle, the tent-like structure God directed Moses to make for worship while in route to the Land of Promise we see that it was also set up in courts.  There was the Outer Court where sacrifices were made, then the inner part of the Tabernacle called the Holy Place and finally the room that was limited to priests only and then only at set times, which was called the Holiest of Holies.

Each of these areas of the Tabernacle contained articles of furniture that holds special meaning to Christians.  We’ve discussed the Outer Court.  Now we’d like to talk about the Holy Place.  In the holy place were three particular pieces of furniture that are very significant to believer’s today.  First of all there was the Table of Showbread.  It was a wooden table similar to what we’d call a coffee table, and was covered with pure gold.  Each Sabbath day the priest would place twelve cakes of unleavened bread on that table and anoint them with a special anointing oil.  The next Sabbath the priest would pour the oil off and burn it, then eat the twelve cakes and replace them with new ones.

Of course the bread is representative of the Word of God.  I talk a lot about the Word of God because, well it is what brings hope, life, and direction into the lives of Believers.  The Word of God is a very important part of our daily walk with God.  If we want to grow and be strong Christians then we must have a steady diet of the living bread – the Word of God.  Jesus also said that He was the bread.  He is the living Word.  Also when we read the Bible letting the Holy Spirit (Jesus’ representative during His physical absence) He makes the Word come alive in our lives.

The second article of furniture was the candlestick or lamp stand.  It had a central base with three branches coming from each side and was made from pure gold.  The priest kept oil in the lamp stand and it was kept burning at all times.  Those seven branches represent the seven-fold spirit of God in our lives.  The fire is to be kept burning all the time.  It is the Holy Spirit in our lives keeping our flame going.  He is the oil we are the lamp stand.  The Spirit of God in our lives is what gives us new life and the flame never goes out.  It is also what makes us the light of the world as Jesus called us.

Finally there was the altar of incense.  It too was also kept burning with a special incense at all times.  This small altar was set right before the entrance into the Holy of Holies – the most Holy place of the Tabernacle.  It represents prayer and worship of God and along with the Spirit in our lives, and the Word of God is imperative to grow in Jesus Christ.  Our prayers and worship are at the entering of the most holy place.  In the next article we will pull all of this together.
