Perfection

by Steve Countryman
10/25/2017 / Christian Living

Some people, including some Christians, believe that to be a Christian you must be perfect. There are some religions who have incorporated that belief into the salvation message of the cross. Believing that Jesus died for your sins isn’t enough to get into heaven. You ALSO have to do “good deeds” to earn your way in.

To be a Christian is to be Christ-like not to be perfect. We are all “practicing Christians” because we are a work in progress. The Holy Spirit changes us from glory to glory, it is an ongoing process.   Philippians 1:6 “I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return].”

People use the excuse that they are not perfect so they don’t qualify to be a Christian. Or how “churches are just full of hypocrites so why bother going?” There is only One person who ever lived who was perfect and His name is Jesus. The world is full of hypocrites. If you’ve ever told a lie then you’re a hypocrite!

The enemy uses lies to convince people that they are not worthy to be a child of God. He says that your past is too full of sin to be forgiven. That you could never be perfect enough to be a Christian. Even Christians get to hear his lies as he condemns them for their sins every time they stumble into sin. All of his lies are meant to push you away from God and following Jesus. That’s how he works; first tempting you to sin then pouncing on you after you sin with his commendation. “There is no condemnation in Christ.”

Remember that Satan is a defeated foe. He has NO POWER over God’s children except that which you give him. Anytime you consider or pay attention to his lying temptations you give him access to your life. The more attention the more access! Sinning is his tool to try to keep you trapped and away from God and His commands.

To live a perfect life as Christ did on earth is our goal for He is our example. Failing to do so is not sin but is what practicing Christians do. A child must first learn to crawl before they can walk. Stumbling and falling along the way doesn’t mean they’ll never walk, it just proves they are willing to try again and again to succeed.

God doesn’t demand nor expect perfection from us His children just obedience! Obedience is the ONLY way to prove our love for Him. Pretending to be perfect on Sundays isn’t a daily walk in obedience. John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commands.”

Don’t live your life by what others tell you. Don’t live your life by what some preachers tell you. Don’t live your life by what this world says you should. And don’t live your life by what you are feeling. Live your life by the Word of God. The bible covers ALL of this world’s problems and troubles through ALL ages! All you have to do is READ IT. Let the Holy Spirit guide you along your journey on your way to being the best Christian you can be not the perfect one you think you should be.
