THE LAW OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS
by Olawale Ogunsola
10/19/2017 / Christian Living
WHAT IS TITHE?
A tithe is a ten percent of your net income. Your income could be from any Godly source. This could be salaries, wages, profit from honest business. These are income from your own sweat.
Do you know what? Your incomes from gifts are not exempted. Any amount of money you are given deserves tithe deduction from it.
This translates that anyone who earns $10,000 on monthly, weekly or daily basis will pay $1000 on receiving his pay. The same holds for a gift or donation of like sum.
Does a student pay tithe? “Yes!” A student must calculate a ten percent of his pocket money and pay same as Tithe. He will also equally reap its gains.
What does the Lord our God say about Tithe?
“Will a man rob God?
Yet you have robbed Me!
But you say,
In what way have we robbed You?’
In Tithes and offerings.
You are cursed with a curse,
For you have robbed Me,
Even this whole nation.
Bring all the tithes into the
Storehouse,
That there may be food in My
House,” Malachi 3:8-10a-b. New King James Version. (NJKV)
Note God’s strong complaint about tithes and offerings. Failure to pay is equivalent to robbery. Do you want God to treat you as a robber?
What are offerings.
This can be any percentage of your earnings. In addition to tithes, many people add another five percent, others, add one, two, three or four percent. This depends on individual’s faith and trust.
For the purpose of emphasis, let me mention a few sources of acceptable offerings.
- Income from your own labor. Your sweat. This is what you earned from your personal effort. Apostle Paul has this to say,
“For we hear that there are some who walk
Among you in a disorderly manner, not
Working at all, but are busy bodies.
Now those who are such we command
And exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ
That they work in quietness and eat their
Own bread” 2Thessalonians 3:11-12.
From such work, tithes and offerings are demanded for the glory of God and benefits of Man.
- Tithe is required to be paid from what you receive from every labor of love from others. Those who give you money or other gifts have ministered to you. You must also pay a tithe and offering from such.
A common question people asked is “Is tithe payable on loan obtained”? A loan is not an income. It is an advance to be repaid. However, there are two points to note on this: using a salary earner as an example.
- If he pays or intends to pay his tithe and offering after deducting the installments, he ought to pay tithe on the loan.
- If he pays or intends to pay his tithes and offerings before deducting the installments, he does not need to pay the tithe and offerings on the loan.
Moreover, those who are not salary or wage earners have to exercise their faith only. Profit from their income is the amount on which tithe and offerings is payable. The strength of your faith plays a role also.
A woman of God gave a testimony in July, 2017. She obtained a loan of $90,000 to pay her son’s fees. On this, she also deducted $9,000 tithe which she paid to a Prophet of God’s choice. Her testimony was the easy repayment of the loan. That is her faith at work. You can do likewise to reap its benefits.
Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord.
