Taking On the Mind of Christ
by Jerry Ousley

“You must be out of your mind!” Was the accusation, “what would ever make you think that?”
I had the facts all wrong. What I thought I had heard was that the daughter of a certain sister was pregnant. Don’t ask me how I got that impression because I’m just not quite sure of that, at least at the time of this conversation. That’s what I heard in my mind. I had mentioned it to my wife, Debbie, asking for an update of her situation. That’s when she said those words.
Very quickly she set me straight. What had been said was that this sister’s daughter was dating a guy and her parents were fearful that she was having sexual relations with him and what was actually said was “I hope she doesn’t get pregnant.” I had only heard the “pregnant” part and made an assumption. You know, those assumptions have gotten me into a lot of trouble over the years. You’d think I would have learned way before now, but somehow I keep on getting stuck in that hole. If when driving a car going down the road you got stuck in a rut or hole the next time you drove down that road you’d more than likely be watching for it. I know I would. That’s the same principle with hearing accurately. After falling into the rut that comes from misunderstanding what’s been said or hearing partially several times one would certainly be watching for it the next time. But No-o-o-o-o-o; not me; I just keep falling into the same old hole as before. I guess it originates with not concentrating on what’s being said and only picking up a few key words. That can be very dangerous. I’m trying to learn because I know the dangers of getting the facts wrong. In the meantime I think I just better keep my mouth shut or maybe I will be out of my mind someday.
In our relationship with Christ we are to get out of our minds. In fact we are told to take on the mind of Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:16 says, “For ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.” What a wonderful verse of scripture. Paul was referring to the situation in the verse just above this that spoke of judging all things. He was asking, “Who has a right to judge a man; does he have the mind of the Lord?” Then he added the “But” saying that we have the mind of Christ.
What exactly does that phrase mean, “We have the mind of Christ?” It means that we should be thinking like Jesus Christ thinks. As advanced as we seem to be, and as smart as it seems we have become, we really know nothing about life unless we think with the mind of Jesus Christ. I know that’s a very broad and powerful statement. I also know that many would laugh at me for saying something like this. Does that make it any the less true? I don’t think so.
When we get saved we allow our Lord, by way of the Holy Spirit, to take up residence in us. That’s why we seem to have warnings when we begin to do something that’s wrong or will harm us. The Holy Spirit is speaking to us, gently reminding us of the possible consequences. That begins the moment we allow Him into our lives.
Taking on the mind of Christ is something completely different. It requires time for us to clear out our own way of thinking and gradually allow our thoughts to be influenced by our Lord. We begin to see situations the way He sees them.
When Jesus walked this earth two thousand years ago, He looked at a blind man, saw the war between good and evil going on inside of him, and felt compassion towards him. When He healed He also saved. He didn’t just heal the body because the body can receive a healing, to this I totally agree, but it will get sick again. It may develop some terrible disease once more. It will eventually wear out and cease to exist.
But our minds continue on. This makes it all the more important that we take on the mind of Christ. We do that by listening to Him as He speaks to us inside. We need to hear that still small voice and take heed to it. As we do we will begin to grow spiritually and our thinking will become more and more like that of Jesus. “What is going on with me?” we may question. But never fear; all we’re doing is taking on the Mind of Christ.
