Life Changes
by Greg Robbins
12/24/2016 / Bible Studies
Life is all about growth, development, maturing, and change. Everything starts out in some type of seed or embryonic form and develops from there. This is a law of life that God laid down from the very beginning. It is not alterable and it will never change for as long as the earth stands. The intelligent course of action is to learn how this law works and then to arrange your life in accordance with this law.
Having said all of this, I have noticed some very drastic changes in my own life. I have also noticed that about every ten years or so, that I evolve into a completely different person than I was before. Simply said, the child that I once was is no more. Search as I may, that child no longer exists. The teenager that I became has also disappeared. I have some grey memories of what he was like, but he is no more. The young man of my twenties, with all of his ideals and dreams, I can no longer find. The man of my thirties who worked hard to achieve dreams and goals has faded away. The man of my forties with the growing cynicism and unfulfilled dreams has also faded away. The only ME that exists now is the 55 year old version of me, who has grown wise enough to serve the Lord and live with eternity in mind.
The study of growth and change has brought some new and amazing thoughts to me. Understanding has begun to dawn in my consciousness. Whatever I did at any previous stage in my life was not the ME that I am now, doing it. It was the person that I WAS who did it, but I am no longer that person.
Now I am not suggesting that I do not take responsibility for what I did back then, because I do. The decision to marry my wife doesn’t change the fact that in the eyes of God, that I am still married to her. There is no escape from that. Jesus made it very clear that the ONLY reason that divorce and remarriage is allowed is if the WOMAN commits adultery against her husband. Then and only then, the man is allowed to divorce his wife and is free to remarry. The woman has no rights to remarry at all unless her husband dies. That is the law that Jesus gave us, and it will never change. Many false prophets and false apostles have said otherwise, but they are not Jesus, and they deceive the people. Woe to those who cast the commandment of Jesus aside and then replace it with a different commandment. But this is exactly what has happened, and at least 50% of the modern church is guilty of, and is living in adultery. God help us!
Going back down memory lane, I see all kinds of things that I would do differently now. I just shake my head about my stupidity in those earlier years. I see the sin, wickedness, and the mistakes of the previous versions of me. This has brought about repentance and change, and I hate the spotted and dirty garments that the earlier versions of me wore. I desire now only white garments to wear, the ones that Jesus provides to his disciples. This comes with the wisdom that is gained by experience. In our younger years we ignorantly do things that we later learn are bad choices, from the penalty that we have to pay from doing it. Like touching a hot stove and being burned. Once is enough. We learn from making mistakes, we experience the penalty of our actions, and we adjust our actions accordingly. This is how we grow in wisdom.
So I am literally evolving and growing every single day. Nothing in life is static. Even dead bodies are decomposing to return and become part of the soil, so that new life can once again spring forth from the earth. This is also what happens to the world around us. Every decade brings great and tremendous changes with it’s passing. There are many documentaries that show what life was like in each decade during the 1900’s and the 2000’s. We can watch, read, and think about these time periods, but look as you will, you cannot find them today, for they no longer exist. I love the paintings of Pierre Renoir and Claude Monet, because they display a romantic era that no longer exists. I love how they dressed during that time period and many of their customs. But alas, those times are gone and they will never return. Time wipes away all that there is and changes everything into something different.
This brings us to the subject of spiritual growth and change. Most professing Christians can tell you the date of their conversion or of their baptism. Much the same as anyone can tell you the date of their birth, when they graduated from High School, or the date of their marriage. In spiritual things there is a big difference. Faith is NOW, just as life is now. In the book of Hebrews chapter eleven and verse one, it says, “NOW faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen.” So I may have been “born again” in January 1980, but Am I presently “born again” in 2016?
1 Peter 1:23 “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides forever.”
The Apostle Peter did not consider the spiritual birth to be past tense like our natural birth is. Peter places it in the continual present tense by saying, BEING born again. You were not born again in the past tense. There is no history of it. Being born again is ALWAYS in the present moment. It matters not at all that you were “born again” back in January of 1980, or at any other point in time. What is relevant is whether you are BEING born again at this precise moment. You must be BORN AGAIN NOW at the moment of your death in order to go to heaven. The modern church doctrine is royally messed up and in error. They place being born again at a place in the past just like your natural birth date. But it is not. It is in this present moment as Peter correctly described it to us.
Ezekiel 33:11-16 “Say unto them, As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn you, turn you, from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel? Therefore, you son of man, say unto the children of your people, the righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sins. When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousness shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he has committed, he shall die for it. Again, when I say unto the wicked, you shall surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of his sins that he has committed shall be mentioned unto him: he has done which is lawful and right; he shall surely live’”
This law of living righteously in the present moment was established many thousands of years ago. Ezekiel clearly taught it before the coming of Christ. Jesus taught it during the time of Christ. Peter taught it after the time of Christ. And Jesus once again taught it in the Book of Revelation, which is the last word on the subject. Anyone who teaches differently is a false prophet and a false apostle. Period. To claim to be saved by grace and yet to continue to live in sin is a great deception, and those who do so will end up in hell, unless they repent and literally turn from their wicked ways, and they literally do righteousness.
1 John 3:7-10 “Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin; for his seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loves not his brother.”
Revelation 22:12-15 “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give to every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie.”
