Repent, and believe the gospel

by Greg Robbins
10/01/2016 / Bible Studies

This is a study of the first words of Jesus, in the Gospel according to Saint Mark.

Mark 1:14-15 "Now after that John was put into prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."

Notice first of all, if you will, that Jesus said, "Now after John was put into prison." Why is this important? What did Jesus do, prior to John being put into prison? After he left home; we see him calling his disciples, going to a wedding, and having his disciples baptize people, unto repentance, for the remission of sins. This was the exact same baptism, as that of John. What don't we see Jesus doing? Preaching, teaching, and performing miracles. And, why is that?

Luke 16:16 "The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into it." The exact time, was from the moment John was put into prison. We never see Jesus preaching, or teaching, the law and the prophets. We see Jesus preaching, and teaching, the kingdom of God. In the four gospels, you will discover, that the gospel of the kingdom of God, includes the righteous requirements of the law. Jesus did not come to do away, with the law and the prophets, but to fulfill them. Jesus taught his followers, to keep the ten commandments, for instance. He never taught them to do animal sacrifices, because, Jesus would be the final sacrifice, as the Lamb of God, and no others would ever be required. He did not teach them to continue the the priesthood either, because the Holy Spirit would now be living inside of believers, as well as the Father, and Jesus. He also made changes, such as adultery no longer just being a physical act, but lust in the heart was now adultery. He also took away the act of divorcement, that Moses had permitted. There are many others as well, but that is a different study.

Jesus said, "The time is fulfilled." It was no longer the time to preach, and to teach, the law and the prophets; but it was now time to preach the kingdom of God. Every single word that Jesus spoke, is part of the gospel of the kingdom of God. Jesus was the Father speaking, to men and women.

John 8:28 "Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things." Everything that Jesus did, and said, was the Father doing it, and speaking it.

John 14:8-11 "Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it suffices us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father: and how say thou then, Show us the Father? Believe thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwells in me, he does the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake."

So every change that Jesus made, was not in the law and the prophets, but in the gospel of the kingdom of God. The Old Testament remains unchanged. All changes took place in the gospel of the kingdom of God. And every single one of these changes, was the Father, who dwelt in Jesus, who did it. Remember that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, are One God. Jesus never did anything on his own. There is only One God, and Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us. Jesus is also the Word of God. He never spoke words, other than what the Father spoke. Remember that later on, the Jews tried to stone Jesus, for saying, "I and my Father are one."

Mark 1:1 "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." Acts 1:1-3 "The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God."

Every word that Jesus spoke, was the gospel of the kingdom of God. And that gospel began, at the very first word of the Gospel according to Saint Mark; as well as the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, Saint Luke, and Saint John. The gospel is; "all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day he was taken up." So this is why Jesus, could at the very beginning of his ministry, say, "Repent ye, and believe the gospel." What people today call the gospel, is only a very small fraction of it. The complete gospel, is every single word, of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Jesus could already preach the gospel, and command people to believe the gospel, at the very beginning of his ministry. From the time John was put into prison, the kingdom of God began to be preached.

God bless you, and may the Lord grant you, eyes that see, ears that hear, and a heart that understands. May you be granted the grace, to repent, and to believe the gospel. I hope to see you in heaven, some day.
