Angels from the Hood
by Francie Snell
9/10/2016 / Miracles
Cruising along at forty miles an hour, my heart dropped when the engine quit without warning. The fuel gauge showed a quarter tank. Panic set in as I helplessly coasted.
Oh NO, Lord, not here, not now!
I wrestled with the steering wheel and maneuvered the small car to the side of the road and felt the urge to cry as it slowed to a stop. I turned the key to the off position and waited. After a long, deep breath, I tried the engine, but no response, not a single click.
The noonday sun streamed through the windshield as I sat wondering what to do. I climbed out of my car and looked both ways. Not a vehicle in sight. My heart sank as I scanned the area to see nothing but open fields of dirt and weeds in every direction. It was the outer edge of town where the only signs of development were the widening of the country road and cement sidewalks.
I folded my arms and slumped back against the hot, dusty car and stared down the street. Then I saw them: two figures in the distance, trudging along the sidewalk on the other side of the road. Where did they come from? They appeared menacing as they lurched along side-by-side getting closer by the second: two male youths wearing sagging pants and black stocking caps pulled low on their foreheads.
I watched them with uneasiness and could see they spotted me. They glanced at each other and my heart raced into overdrive. Again, I looked both ways, horrified to discover still no cars to be seen.
It seemed I was now their focus and topic of discussion. Repeatedly, they looked at me, and then back at each other as they walked, nodding their heads as if in agreement about something. Adrenaline shot through me when they stopped directly across the road, faced me and looked both ways. I felt like trapped prey, and could only hope they wouldn't attack in broad daylight.
My hopes were dashed when they began running toward me with giant strides, across the first lane, the second lane .... In my heart I cried, Lord what do I do? My imagination leaped with panic. I'll scream, I'll kick, I'll wave my arms and pretend I know Judo! I held my breath as they stopped in front of me about ten feet away.
One of them, a lanky boy not much taller than I am, placed his hands on his waist and leaned on one hip. Peering out from his cap pulled down just above his eyes, he cocked his head and asked, "Hey lady, you want us to fix your car?"
I stared in amazement and stuttered, "Ah... well... yeah... you can help me?"
With an air of gallantry, the boy replied, "Sure. Pop the hood," then started for the front of the car as the other boy, a little taller, stood by like a faithful assistant.
Astonished by the sudden turn of events, I got into my car and pulled the latch. The boy lifted the hood and then disappeared behind it. A few seconds passed, and then he called out. "OK, try it now." His voice brimmed with confidence.
I turned the key, and the motor sprang to life without hesitation. I emerged from the car. "Wow, I can't believe you fixed it so fast. Thank you!"
"No problem, you're welcome," the boy said nonchalantly and dropped the hood closed. They stepped past me, around the car, and up onto the sidewalk.
"Thank you so much," I repeated, my mind still reeling and my mouth still babbling, "I can't believe you fixed it."
They both looked back over their shoulders at me and gave an affirmative chin-up gesture, then continued down the street.
As I watched them go, I wondered where they were going...down the street to nowhere? Then I pondered what is written about angels.
Hebrews 1:14: "Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister to those who will inherit salvation?"
"Angels from the hood," I quipped.
As I drove away from my adventure, I couldn't help but reflect on the comical twist in the way God answered my fearful prayers that day through two mysterious travelers. They were a frightful sight who had appeared out of nowhere, at just the right time, and with the perfect solution to my problem. Just as quickly as they came, they were gone, somewhere on the outer edge of town. I believe that's precisely what angels would do.
