Beware of Payday Scams
by Kathern Welsh
7/27/2016 / Self Help
Have you ever found yourself in desperate need of money and decided to try an online payday loan?
Well, I have, and it's been a disaster! But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me digress.
I had to suddenly vacate my home, when an upstairs water pipe broke during the winter, during a few days when I wasn't at home. When I got back and opened the door, it was like it was raining inside. I was so stunned, I just stood there for a time, trying to absorb what was happening. Anyway, I quickly called my daughter, the owner of the house, and she came running across the road, and was as shocked as I had been when she stepped inside the door.
This quite unexpected event created an urgent need for extra money. Without any friends or relatives who were in a position to help, I turned to the Internet.
After some research and investigating the reviews, and comparing several companies, I filled out several applications, and waited. It was only a few days before I got my first loan. That got me through the immediate crisis and I thought things would level out.
A friend invited me to stay there until I figured out what to do. I think I was in a mild case of shock. That happened in February and I was scheduled for major surgery in the middle March. I felt a little like a person out on a big lake, in a small boat with no paddle or motor, and no one around.
Circumstances have a way of throwing obstacles in your path, sometimes one after the other, and at the most inopportune times.
Just before I went into the hospital, I took my van to a Walmart Service Center to have the tires I had recently bought re-balanced, and while there, I asked them to change the oil and check all the other fluids included with it. I wanted it in good running condition when I got out of the hospital.
The next day, after I played at both churches, and at a local restaurant, the temperature gage shot way up, and the motor started smoking. The next morning it wouldn't even start. To make a long story a little shorter, it was determined that Walmart had over-filled the oil pan, and caused the motor to overheat. I did some internet research and gathered supporting documents, about damage which occurs due to over-filling the oil, and sent everything to Walmart's Resolution Center, but to no avail. They would not do anything to remedy the situation. I was left without a vehicle, and no money to get another one.
Shortly after I got out of the hospital, I began doing a search for a car on the Internet. It was actually a rather fun experience, looking at all those cars, sending requests for information, and getting emails and phone calls from sales people all over the area, trying to sell me a vehicle.
At last I was successful. It was a short lived relief, though. About three months later, on my way to the surgeon for a check-up, I fell asleep at the wheel [due to medication they had me on] and went into a large ditch, totaling the CRV. I was not hurt, thankfully. The insurance paid it off, which was a blessing.
So, it was back to the internet in search of another vehicle. I finally got a Dodge Caravan.
But, I started this article to write about Payday loans. I got taken once, by a smooth talking person who convinced me to go to a store and get a card and to put $85 on it. Then to call him, and money would be transferred to my checking account, and I would be getting the $85 back.
Well, to shorten it all, I never got the loan and I couldn't get my $85 back.
Beware. This tactic is used by most of those companies. Even when I asked them if I had to buy a card, they would try to convince me that it was all legal and legitimate and that I would not lose any money. They lie more convincingly then most people tell the truth. BEWARE of smooth talking people who can barely speak English. 99% of these scams use people who are very likely in another country. There may be some who are US citizens, who speak perfect English, but I never talked to any.
So, if you need a loan, try going to a local bank or credit union, in person. You'll be much better treated and you won't fall victim to the numerous payday scams found on the internet. And, once you apply to one, you will be bombarded with promises by countless others.
There's a forest of scams out there, and there seems to be no legal way to stop them. They continue to thrive on desperate people who really need a fair shake, but end up getting taken for money they don't have.
God bless you and it is best to ask Him to guide you. He will, you know, if you listen and watch for His urgings and His voice whispering in your ear.
God has been giving me words for years. I had my own TV show at one time, when i asked Him what to do with them, He told me to "Share Them!" I asked Him again what I was to do with them and He said again, "Share them!" So I'm doing so here on FaithWriters.
