"Go and sin no more."
by Steve Countryman

Every time I used to read this scripture, it would scare me. It sounded more like a warning. That if you sinned again you were in serious trouble. That's how I took this passage. Whenever I would stumble and sin I would beat myself up for it over and over again. My prayers would end up with me praying that I wouldn't mess up by stumbling back into my sin. Each time I failed and stumbled I would end up back into the same prayers. I didn't realize at the time that I was causing my fear to put me in its shadow. Everywhere I would go it would overshadow me.
I grew tired of my same old defeated prayers. I remember telling God that I knew that He had more for me than this. That my prayers carried no blessings. How can a Christian be a blessing to others if you can't get pass your sinful mistakes. I became my own prisoner! Allowing my fear of failing to reign over my prayer life. When you pray that way and allow your fears to trap you then you spend your days worried about failing and sinning again. Your fears then come to pass and you fail/sin more often. I didn't see that scripture for what it really is and for what it stands for, freedom! There is no condemnation in Christ.
God didn't choose me before time began to be a failure, a loser, a victim or to be defeated. Jesus didn't say "go and try not to sin anymore" or "go and hope that you don't sin anymore". The answer was right in front of me the whole time. All I needed to remember was the character of Jesus. That main character is love! For love that Jesus has would not take the phrase "go and sin no more" and treat it as a threat.
"Go and sin no more" is an anchor, a rock, victory, a life preserver, a tool used to rescue someone. An anchor for your hope. It gives you something to hold on to when the winds of sin are about to blow you away. It is a declaration of victory. It is an absolute, a definite certainty, a statement of freedom from fear of sinning again. Jesus made that statement in full power and authority for us to lay claim to and hold tightly to it. For when you ask for forgiveness of your sin you also "repent" which means to turn away from that sin. It brings not only victory but freedom from your sins, from your sinful addictions, from sinful habits.
So next time you stumble and fall into temptation and sin, get back up, dust yourself off not letting any of that sin "stick to you", pray to God acknowledging your failures before Him by repenting of them and then declare who God says you are. "I am the head and not the tail. I am above only and not beneath. I am more than a survivor, more than a overcomer because my God has made me more than a conqueror through him who loves me. I am the righteousness of God for I am a child of the Most High God." Remember that you can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens you. So go and sin no more!
