Get out of that rut
by Vanessa Grossett
4/08/2015 / Self Help
There are times in our lives, where we feel like we're stuck in a rut. We want to move forward in our career, or with circumstances in our personal lives, but we just can't seem to get ahead.
We pray asking God to change things, but it seems like the situation is getting worse. You ask yourself, why is this happening? Why can't I move forward? You feel like you're going round in circles. I know I have been there.
Being a Literary Agent wasn't my first career choice. Though I was a 'teachers pet', in my English class, and was good at writing stories, I wanted to get into acting. My mum took me to stage school, and I went to learn about TV dramas. Later on I had more of a love for the management side of things. So I decided I wanted to be a casting agent for actors.
However it was at college that my passion for casting agent changed to writing. I got involved in volunteering for magazines and newspapers; I took a Journalism degree at University. I eventually got a job as a press office assistant, my degree and volunteering came in handy for this position.
I enjoyed my job; I thought it was the best job in the world. I didn't need to leave, instead I will work my way up in the company I use to tell myself. But when I came to the Lord in 2005 my view changed. I enjoyed my job but I knew He had different plans for me, as my desire for creative writing grew. It grew so much that I took a short course in it, and I wrote my first published book.
Though I enjoyed the writing my passion for management, overtook the writing side. I researched into a Literary Agent career. I knew this was for me. I applied to various agencies, even publishing companies and got nowhere. I felt disappointed, and confused. My attitude with my job at the time changed, my work became so sloppy that my manager was concerned, as I got an award for employee of the month, and now I was going downhill.
I didn't even want to pray anymore, I felt stuck in a rut. I was not moving forward with my real career. I even asked God why He put this career in my heart so strongly, and not make me move forward in it.
I eventually decided there is no point moping around, let me just be thankful for what I've got and when the time is right God will open the door. I had a more positive attitude at work; I even regained my employee of the month title.
It was in 2010 when God opened the door for me to do volunteering as a Literary Agent Assistant, in order for me to do the career I'm doing now.
I thank God for the journalism degree, the press office work, and even learning about TV production, as I am able to assist my authors in a wide variety of things, such as writing press releases.
What I thought was being stuck in a rut, was actually God equipping me for this career, so I could have a firm foundation when managing others. Brethren it is very important that while we are in training that we have the right attitude, as God couldn't open the door for me to volunteer as a Literary Agent Assistant until my attitude was correct at my press office work. After all if my attitude is not correct in the small, then how could it be when I receive the big things?
I know it is not easy, but don't see your situation as negative, see it as God teaching you something, see it as God equipping you for greater things. Brethren if you're not ready where you're at now, then how can you move forward? A baby crawls before it can walk.
Instead of seeing you're situation as being stuck in a rut, just open your heart to whatever it is God is trying to teach you, as when you get to your vision it will make you a better person, and you will have a firm foundation, especially on Christ the solid rock.
I'll leave you with this scripture,'this vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.' Habakkuk 2:3
