Continued from Ch-II, Part- 1
THE HIGH PRIEST IN THE HOLY OF HOLIES:
The anointed priest- the high priest stood for the people of Israel. The high priest carried their burdens and sins to the Lord. When he sinned; the whole Israel sinned, when he entered the sanctuary, he went in on behalf of the people, when he appeared before God, they appeared. His work in the Holy of Holies is described in Lev 16:7-10; 21-22,
"And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats, one for the Lord, and the other for the scape goat. And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scape goat, shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make an atonement with him, to let him go for a scape goat into the wilderness."
"Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people and bring his blood within the veiland sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat seven times." Lev 16:15
"And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions and all their sins putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness; and the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited." Lev 16:21-22
This part of the tabernacle, i.e. the Holy of Holies, is so holy that if any body entered in it with his uncleanness, he died immediately. There is a tragic story of Nadab and Abihu, the two sons of Aaron, in the tenth chapter of Leviticus who entered into it in a way that was not proper.
"And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his /censer, and put fire before the Lord, which offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded not, and they died before the Lord." Lev 10:1-2
Therefore, the Lord said to Moses,
".speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark: that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat. Thus shall Aaron came into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering. He shall put on the holy linen coat, and shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments: therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on." Lev 16:2-4
This is the reason why Aaron did not enter into the Holy of Holies without putting on the holy garments and without the blood, which he offered for himself and for the errors of the people. The Tabernacle is a sign of God's Holiness and His Righteousness. God says,
"I am Holy" Lev 11:44
Ps 111:9 says,
"Holy and Reverend is His name."
Therefore, one who approaches the Lord must be sanctified of all uncleanness and be holy as God is. From this point of view, it is impossible for a sinful man to reach God unless God Himself makes us holy.
The Costume that Aaron had worn:
1.The "ephod"
The outer garment worn by the High Priest was known as the "ephod". It was made of fine twined linen, embroidered with blue purple, scarlet and gold. The main purpose of the ephod was to hold the breastplate.
2.The rope and the golden bells:
The rope and the golden bells of the ephod was blue without seam. Pomegranates were made of blue, purple and scarlet yarn around the hem of the rope, with gold bells between them. Aaron must wear the gold bells when he entered the most holy place. The sound of the bells was heard as he entered into it before the Lord and came out so that he would not die. Ex 28:31-35
3. The Breastplate:
The breastplate was woven of blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen yarn, embroidered with figures of gold. This multicolored breastplate that Aaron had worn carried twelve precious stones arranged in four rows.
". The first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row, and the second row shall be an emarold, a sapphire, and a diamond. And the third row a ligure, and agate and an amethyst. And the fourth row a beryl and an onyx and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their enclosings. And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet: every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes." Ex 28:17-21
These twelve precious stones represent the children of Israel, the twelve tribes of Israel,
"stones of memorial unto the children of Israel", "His peculiar treasure." Ps 135:4
The breastplate was called, "the breastplate of Judgment". It was because it served primarily for bearing the two precious stones, the "Urim" and the "Thumim" upon the heart of Aaron. Ex 28:30
