CHAPTER ONE

BEMA SEAT VS GREAT WHITE THRONE

Paul wrote, "For we must all appear before the JUDGEMENT SEAT OF CHRIST; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad" (2 Cor. 5:10).
John, however, revealed, "Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence and there was no place for them.
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books" (Rev 20:11-12, NIV).
The first Scripture above talks about every believer (of course, those who endure to the end) appearing before the judgment seat of Christ to be rewarded for their work on earth.
The word 'judgment' here in Greek is the word 'bema' which means 'a divine tribunal.'
But the second Scripture speaks of a great white throne where all unbelievers and ungodly people will appear and be judged before they are cast into the lake of fire.
This great white throne of judgment is necessary before they are cast into the lake of fire because God will justify Himself and His Word as a God of justice, after which he will condemn them to eternal punishment as the God of judgment (see Job 37:23, Ps. 89:14, KJV).

CHAPTER TWO

MAN LOOKS AT THE OUTWARD APPEARANCE, BUT THE LORD LOOKS AT THE HEART

"But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height The LORD does not look at the things man look at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart'" (1 Sam. 16:7, NIV).
"I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve" (Jer. 17:10, NIV).
Yes, man looks at the outward appearance and judges by that but the Lord looks at the heart and judges by this.
The second Scripture above talks about the Lord, who searches the heart or spirit, and examines the mind. But why does he do these?
I believe the immediate reason for his searching the heart is to see one's intent or motive while that for his examining one's mind is to see one's faithfulness.
So he searches the heart to see how willing or loving one is in what he does, and he examines the mind to see how faithful or trustworthy one is in what he asks him to do.
Moreover, the remote and more important reason is found in the second half of that verse. It reads, "to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve" (Jer. 17:10, NIV).
You see, at the bema seat of Christ, he will reward every believer according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve after searching his heart for willingness or love and examining his mind for faithfulness or trustworthiness.

CHAPTER THREE

RIGHT AND WRONG MOTIVES

Paul wrote, "I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God" (1 Cor. 4:3-5, NIV).
He also wrote, "For we must all appear and be revealed as we are before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive (his pay) according to what he had done in the body, whether good or evil [considering what his purpose and motive have been, and what he has achieved, been busy with, given himself and his attention to accomplishing]" (2 Cor. 5:10, AMP).
The two Scriptures above and many other Scriptures imply that the Lord will commend our right motives (though in our right assignments) but condemn our wrong motives on the day of reckoning. Please read them again and mediate on them!
A right motive is a love motive. Since the first and greatest commandment is to love God with everything and the second is to love mankind as ourselves. A right motive is found in doing something because we love God and / or man sincerely from our hearts (Mat. 22:36-40).
On the other hand, a wrong motive includes the following:
i.Doing something to be seen of men - Mat. 6:5-6; 16-18; Mt. 23:5-7).
ii.Doing something to be praised or honoured by men - Jn. 5:41, 44, Mt. 6:2-4
iii.Doing something to become famous (well-known for good)
iv.Doing something to become popular (well-admired for good)
v.Doing something so as to boast (impress people with your ability, achievements, possessions or future plan) - Pro. 27:1, James 4:13-17
vi.Giving to somebody so that the same person can give back to you - Luk 6:34-36
vii.Spreading the gospel (through speaking, writing or singing) so as to make money - Tit. 1:11; 1 Pet. 5:2.
viii.Doing something because of the love of the world (lust of the eye, lust of the flesh or pride of life) 1 Jn. 2:15-17).
ix.Thoughts which make one praise or honour oneself Pro 27:2, Jn 8:54, 2 Cor. 11:16-33 (NIV) , 2 Cor. 12:1-10 (NIV).
x.Mental attitudes portraying one as taking the place of Christ as the Head of His Church Mt. 23:7-12
Do you think those believers who have received honour from men for their meaningful contributions in life will receive any reward from God even if their motives have been right?

SUMMARY
Jesus replied; "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.'
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commands" (Mat.22:37-40, NIV).

"LET EVERY MAN PROVE HIS OWN WORK"
This is Paul's wise instruction as contained in Galatians 6:4 (KJV).
I will quote that verse in the Amplified Bible "But let every person carefully scrutinize and examine and test his own conduct and his own work.
He can then have the personal satisfaction and joy of doing something commendable [in itself alone] without [resorting to] boastful comparison with his neighbor."
Several years ago, I read the story of Junius whose ministry was a blessing to many people. The sanctuary was jam-packed.
Many had been saved and many were seeking Christ. He was pleased with his sermons and efforts.
While he was resting one day, he had a strange dream in which he was asked "How is your zeal?" He felt his own zeal was fantastic and pleasing.
After the stranger had weighed it he said, "One hundred pounds!" He passed it through fire and took notes as the process continued.
At the end of it all, he gave him the notes with a look of sadness mixed with mercy and said "May God save you!" Then he left the room.
The 'notes' read thus:
Analysis of the zeal of Junius a candidate for a crown of Glory
Weight in mass 100lbs
On this on analysis there proves to be:
Bigotry ............................................ 10 parts wood
Personal ambition ............................ 23 parts hay
Love of praise .............................. 19 parts and
Pride of denomination ......................15 parts stubble
Pride of talent ................................... 14 parts
Love of authority .............................. 12 parts

Love to God ......................................4 parts pure
Love to man ...................................... 3 parts zeal
100
After going through it he cried out, "Lord, save me!" As he knelt
gazing upon the paper in his hand, it changed into a mirror and he saw
his heart reflected in it. (That's why we need to examine our hearts and
minds in the mirror of the Word daily - see James 1:22- 25, Hebrews
4:12-13, John 12:47-48).
Then he said "The record is true!... I saw it. I felt it" So he besought God to save him from himself with many tears. Then he woke up with a loud cry of agony.
He concluded "I had once prayed to be saved from hell but prayer to be saved from myself now was immeasurably more fervent and distressful."
(Culled from a current magazine titled 'A Worker's Dream.' )

WORD OF EXHORTATION
Jesus said "For nothing is hid that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light" (Luke 8:17, RSV).
Peter also wrote, "And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear" (1Peter 1:17).

PRAYER
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting" (Ps 139: 23- 24, NIV).

WRONG ACTIONS BUT RIGHT MOTIVES
Several years ago, my mother told me about a grandma who was looking after a baby. The mother of the baby told grandma to bath him with Dettol (an antiseptic) or so but to administer tonic to him through his mouth.
After the mother had left for work, unfortunately, grandma bathed the innocent baby with tonic but gave him Dettol or so to drink, all in ignorance!
I believe her action was wrong but her motives could be right. That did not make her innocent. I am not justifying her at all.
Why do you think Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me" (1 Cor 4:4, NIV)?
The Amplified Bible puts that verse as, "I am not conscious of anything against myself, and I feel blameless; but I am not vindicated and acquitted before God on that account. It is the Lord [Himself] who examines and judges me."
In essence, I'm trying to say that you can have a right motive of love for God and man but make a mistake out of ignorance, impatience or so. A mistake and a sin are not the same (Jam 4:17).
Consider a young girl who claims to have a right motive for committing an abortion. God will see her abortion as a sin but a miscarriage could be a mistake.
Jesus said, "Ye are they which justify yourselves before men, but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God" (Luke 16:15).
Now what happens to a man who fulfils a wrong assignment on earth but with right motives? Will he receive a reward from the Lord for it?
The truth is: if a man whom God sends on an assignment and who obeys him but with wrong motives, will have no reward for that assignment, then where will the man whom God does not send but who goes on his own, even with right motives appear?
Friend, just as God will not reward me for what he has called you to do, so will he not reward you for what he has assigned someone else to do (1 Cor 9:24).

RIGHT ACTIONS BUT WRONG MOTIVES
Paul wrote, "If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames (that I may boast) but have not love. I gain nothing" (1 Cor 13:2-3 NIV, see footnote in this Bible version for words in brackets).
You can do the right things with wrong motives. You may give people prophecies so that you can raise a big offering.
You may move in word of wisdom (fathoming mysteries) and in word of knowledge so that people can praise and worship you as a superstar.
You may perform miracles, heal the sick and use special faith to solve people's problems so that they can clap for you and bestow you with gifts.
As long as you don't do these things because you love the people and want them to fulfill their missions on earth, then the Bible says you are nothing (before God). The people may celebrate you as something but heaven rates you as nothing. There are too many 'nothings' on the pulpit today (see 1 Cor 13:2)!
Also, if you give all your money to the poor, you bequeath your house to orphans, you give your T.V set and computer to the church, you give your clothes to beggars, you give your food stuffs to widows, and So on, so that you may boast or impress others without loving the beneficiaries sincerely from your heart, then you have no gain for such (vs 3).
The same thing happens if you surrender you body to the flames for the sake of someone you pretend to love (vs 3). That means one may donate one's kidney to a dying person just to boast or because of fear of what people will say.
The Amplified Bible puts that verse 3b as "If I surrender my body to be burned or IN ORDER THAT I MAY GLORY BUT HAVE NOT LOVE (God's love in me) I gain nothing."

CHAPTER FOUR

DAY OF RECKONING

The Day of Reckoning is called the Day of Jugdment in the Scriptures.
BOLDNESS OR FEAR ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT?
John wrote "And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God and God in him. In this way love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment because in this world we are like him.
There is no fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love" (1Jn 4:16-18, NIV).
John was saying that we rely or depend on complete or mature agape love to give us confidence or boldness on the day of judgment.
He, however, implied that if we don't walk in this love sincerely from our hearts, then we will have fear (not confidence, not boldness) on the day of judgment.
In other words, if you are motivated to do things because you love God and love man sincerely from your heart, then you will be bold or confident to face the Judge on the day of judgment.
But if you are motivated to do things without loving God and man truly from your heart, then you will be afraid or fearful to face the Judge.
Why is this so? The reason is found in verse 16 above. It says, "God is love." So, if God is the Judge and God is love, then it can be inferred that the Judge is love.
So who is going to judge us on that day? Simply put, Love is going to judge us because God is love. Remember that Jesus was God made flesh (John 1:1, 14).
You see, on the terrible day of the believers' judgment, the yardstick will not be faith. Neither will it be hope. Thank God for people with strong faith and high hope. We must increase in our faith and hope life daily.
Interestingly, the yardstick will be love. That's why the Scripture says "And now these remain: faith, hope and love. BUT THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE (1 Cor 13:13 NIV).
Will you then be bold or fearful on the day of judgment? The KJV uses 'boldness' in place of 'confidence' in 1 John 4:17.
To have boldness on that day, we must have perfect love for God and man. We have to do things out of genuine love. Now study on God-kind of love and grow in it daily and let it motivate you always!
Don't forget this: the greatest force in heaven or on earth is neither faith nor hope but LOVE!

SURPRISES ARE WAITING FOR US ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT
The Scripture says "But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid which is Jesus Christ.
If a man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw his work will be shown for what it is because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved but only as one escaping through the flames" (1 Cor 3:10 -15, NIV).
Some time ago, after watching a VCD of a man who has an apostolic ministry. I had a horrible night vision to caution me.
I had already fallen in love with his international ministry and the glowing testimonies about their empowerment projects for people, especially youths both in Nigeria and abroad.
But, in that shocking prophetic dream, I was told about an area where he had a wrong motive, and to the best of my memory, I was given Revelation 2:23.
That Scripture reads, "I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I AM HE WHO SEARCHES HEARTS AND MINDS, AND I WILL REPAY EACH OF YOU ACCORDING TO YOUR DEEDS" (Rev. 2:23, NIV).
In that same experience, I was told what another minister of God, a frontline preacher in this nation, was not doing something right. This great man of God has a weakness.
Each of us has a weak point, but we must master our weaknesses. He loves showing off his personality. So he has problem with personality cult or hero worship.
That's why we need to pray for one another. In the course of this writing, I have prayed for these two ministers. Friends, I need your prayers, too for I have my weaknesses, which I'm mastering.
The story of Prophet Jonah was a pathetic one which teaches us a great lesson. He went and proclaimed the Word of the LORD to the Ninevites for going sake.
He didn't love the people; he only obeyed reluctantly after the LORD had shaken him with the storms of life.
So he expected the people to be destroyed in spite of his prophetic warning to them. But God who is love relented and spared them when they repented. What happened next?
"But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. He prayed to the LORD, O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? This is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and ABOUNDING IN LOVE, a God who relents from sending calamity. Now, O LORD, take away my life, for its better for me to die than to live.
"Jonah went outand waited to see what would happen to the city" (Jonah 4:1-3, 5, NIV).
Eventually, he showed that he had concerned about a tree, whereas he had no sincere love for the people he was sent to. What about you and me?
He simply obeyed God for two reasons. First, he did not want God to kill him. He was afraid of death. That was why he said he wanted to die when God spare the people. He felt since his prophecy didn't come to pass the way he had expected, then he should experience the same death he had been running away from.
Second, he wanted to boost his ego. He wanted to be praised as a man who prophesied the destruction of a people and had it come to pass. The reputation of his ministry was more important than the salvation and deliverance of the people!
Friend, do you know that prophet, Jonah will have no reward on the Day of Judgment for his mission to Nineveh? Read Jonah 3 and 4.
1 Corinthians 3.10-15, our opening Scripture, reveals that some saints will be saved but their work will be burnt up with fire.
Only those whose work survives the fire will receive their rewards. Let's be careful how we build. Let's build out of love for God and mankind! Surprises are waiting for us on that day!

CHAPTER FIVE

GOD'S FORMULA FOR ETERNAL REWARDS

TWO CRITERIA FOR ETERNAL REWARDS
1.WILLINGNESS (RIGHT MOTIVE OF LOVE)
Paul wrote, "Woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
For if DO this thing WILLINGLY, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
What is my reward then?..." (1 Cor. 9:16-18).
To be willing is to do something from a heart of love in the context of our study. Thank God the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit given to us as believers, but that doesn't mean we would always automatically obey God willingly in love.
We need to learn to follow the love nature in our hearts, which can be very hard at times (Ro. 5:5). You see, if we walk in love, we will be both willing and obedient. The proof of love is willingness (Gen. 22:2,9-18) while the product of true love is obedience (Jn 14:15). That's why love can never fail (1 Cor. 13:8).
Just as Paul linked God's reward for him to his willingness (a right motive of love) in 1 Corinthians 9:17-18 above, so Jesus linked the Father's reward for his children to their love in Luke 6:35. Please check and study all these Bible references.

2.FAITHFULNESS (RIGHT ACTION OF CONSISTENT OBEDIENCE)
Paul also revealed, "So then, let us [apostles] be looked upon as ministering servants of Christ and stewards (trustees) of the mysteries (the secret purposes) of God.
Moreover, it is [essentially] required of stewards that a man should be found faithful [proving himself worthy of trust].
So do not make any hasty or premature judgments before the time when the Lord comes [again] , for He will both bring to light the secret things that are [now hidden] in darkness and disclose and expose the [secret] aims (motives and purposes) of heart" (1 Cor. 4:1-2, 5, AMP).
The word 'faithful' means 'trustworthy, dependable as a result of being consistently obedient.' You can also say that someone is faithful if they are full of faith to the extent that they will not fail because they are tested and trusted (by God's grace)!
Notice that Paul first talked about being faithful in verse 2 above before talking about being eternally rewarded in verse 5.
Interestingly, Paul wrote in 1 Cor. 9:17 as already seen, "For if I DO this thing WILLINGLY, I have a REWARD."
Three words are very important here, namely: DO, WILLINGLY and REWARD.
And according to Dr. Vine, the Greek word translated 'do' here means 'to practise, i.e. perform repeatedly or habitually.'
So, to get an eternal reward, two things are involved.
1.Be willing
2.Do or obey God habitually or consistently, which translates to faithfulness.

CHAPTER SIX

TEMPORARY AND ETERNAL REWARDS

The masters told two of his servants "Well done GOOD and FAITHFUL servant! " (See Mat 25:21-23 NIV).
The word 'good' here is better understood as 'love-motivated' by studying Philippians 1:15-18 preferably in the NIV or Amplified Bible.
God said through Isaiah, "If you are willing (that is operating from a heart of love) and obedient you will eat the best from the land:
But if you resist (that is, you are unwilling) and rebel (that is, become disobedient) you will be devoured by the sword. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken" (Is 1:19 -20 NIV).
The Scripture also says, "A faithful man will abound with blessings but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished" (Pro 28:20 RSV).
I have discovered from Scriptures that only if we serve God willingly and obediently, then he will give us some of the best rewards to enjoy in this world and in the world to come.
In other words, he will give us temporary rewards for our lives here but eternal rewards for hereafter if we are both willing and obedient.
I believe there are 4 kinds of believers in this respect:
1.Those who are neither willing nor obedient (Is 1:20)
2.Those who are willing but not obedient (Mt 26:41b)
3.Those who are not willing but obedient (John 3:13; Jonah 4:11)
4.Those who are both willing and obedient (Is 1:19)

WILLINGNESS AND OBEDIENCE: SECRETS OF ABUNDANT PROSPERITY
I read Deuteronomy 28 for years before I began to see that verse 1 is not just talking about doing all God's commandments. That verse says we are "to observe and to do all his commandments"
The Hebrew word translated 'observe' means 'be careful, be circumspect, be watchful, look narrowly.'
You see, the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English defines careful in different ways. One of them is 'paying a lot of attention to detail so that something is done correctly and thoroughly.'
In other words, to observe talks about the manner (how) while to do speaks of the action.
That means if we do all his commandments in the way he has prescribed for us - the way of love, then he will give us abundant prosperity (verses 9-11 NIV).
Similarly, in Genesis 22, God told Abraham to sacrifice his son whom he loved on a mountain to be revealed to him.
He obeyed but just before he would slice off the boy's throat, the angel of the Lord said, "Hey, hang on there. I am not a killjoy going about making people commit murder. No, not at all. I am only testing your heart (willingness) and action (obedience).

"Now that you are willing and obedient, I will bless and multiply you so much so that you will be a blessing spiritually, mentally and physically to all humanity says the Lord" (read Gen 22:1-18 carefully).
Nasir Siddiki buttressed this in his wonderful book, "Kingdom Principles of Financial Increase." He explained that one may wonder why some prominent ministers are exploding in great financial prosperity to assist them fulfil their call.
Then he submitted that it has taken some of them 20, 30 or 40 years before they could prepare their hearts to walk in integrity and purity so that they could possess material wealth without that wealth possessing them.
He concluded that we don't need to wait that long to get our hearts prepared because what took others a long time can take us a shorter time if we yield more to the Spirit!
One Scripture that has continued to fascinate me along this line lately is: "And God is able to make all grace (every favour and earthly blessing) come to you in abundance so that you may always and under all circumstances and whatever the need be self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation]" (2 Cor 9:8b AMP).
But earlier in that chapter Paul wrote "For I am well acquainted with your willingness not as an extortion (wrung out of you) but as a generous and WILLING GIFT... Let each one (give) as he made up his own mind and PURPOSED IN HIS HEART, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion for God loves ( He takes pleasure in prizes above other things and is unwilling to abandon or to do without) a cheerful (joyous, "PROMPT TO DO IT") giver [whose heart is in his giving])" (vs 2,5,7 AMP).
Then verse 13 says " They will glorify God for your loyalty and obedience to the Gospel of Christ which you confess ."(AMP).
In summary, to enjoy God's abundant prosperity that will enable us to fulfil our ministry as God desires, we must ensure we love God and men willingly and do all his commands spiritually, ministerially, materially, financially, and so on (see also Josh 1;8, Deu 11:1, 13-15, Deu 7;9,12 -16, 2 Cor 8:3, 11-12, 1Chr 28:9-10, 1 Chr 29:5,9; 2 Chr 16;9; Ex 25:2, Ex 35:5).
You see, God's word doesn't fail to work for people, but people fail to make it work for themselves! Just as you work out your salvation with fear and trembling, so must you work out your financial and material prosperity in willingness and obedience (Phil. 2:12).
I discovered from the Scriptures that Godly financial and material prosperity has more that just one right key.
The Scriptures give us about 12 right keys. And if one of them is missing, you may wonder why things seem not to be working for you. But the Word always works.
Some of the right keys to Godly financial and material prosperity are: right vocation (skill or assignment), right giving (tithing and offering), right thinking, right believing, right confession, right living, right place, right motive, and so on.
Applying all these 12 keys makes you live in willing obedience so that you can enjoy the best of the land you are sent to, not the land you choose to go to on your own (Is. 1:19).

SINNER'S CONFESSION
If you are not yet born-again, say this:
I choose to repent today. Also I choose to believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose up for my justification.
The Scripture says, "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Rom 10:9).
Therefore, I believe in Jesus in my heart and confess Him as my Lord. Now I am born-again (Amen).
SAY THIS ALOUD TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
Also Jesus said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8).
And on the day of Pentecost "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:4).
Therefore, I receive the Holy Spirit by faith right now and I begin to speak in an unknown tongue (unlearned tongue) as He gives me the utterance.
I command every foul spirit [spirit of fear, spirit of unbelief, spirit of doubt, religious spirit, unforgiving spirit] wanting to hinder me to stop in its evil operation in my life in Jesus' name.
Thank you God for filling me with your Spirit in Jesus' name (Amen).
