Sound Doctrine

by Henry Miranda
9/25/2014 / Bible Studies

As Christians we must have a foundation of sound doctrine to build a stable Christian life. A good sounding doctrine may not always be a right doctrine; we must check the spirit to see whether it's from man or God. And we must determine if what we are being taught lines up with scripture.

1 Timothy 6:3 (NKJV)
"If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness"

Neglecting sound doctrine brings grave danger for sound doctrine is necessary for establishing biblical truth and refuting error. It is the very heart of Christian faith. It is both relevant and practical for Christian living. Sound doctrine allows no compromise and compromise is not an option for one who belongs to Christ.

True teaching promotes righteousness; sin flourishes where sound doctrine is opposed. Never stray from "the simplicity that is in Christ" doctrine is the study of the revealed word of God.

There are no short cuts into heaven, you can only get to heaven through Jesus, for Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me". For we know that our heavenly Father is in heaven.

Doctrine simply means teaching or that which is taught. The doctrines of the Bible are simply the teachings of God's word. Thus, there is sound teaching of doctrine, and unsound teaching of doctrine. The word of God is a book of doctrine. Take doctrine out of God's word and you have nothing left! The spiritual gift of the exposition of the Bible (teaching) is therefore meant for our edification through the "boasting" of the cross of Christ which is the meaning of "sound doctrine."

If the doctrine is to be sound it must be in harmony with all the scripture. No doctrine (teaching) that is not in agreement with scripture could ever be considered sound. Our faith is based on a sound specific message. And that teaching must "boast in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ". But the primary message is explicitly defined: "Christ died for our sins and he was raised on the third day." Our eternal destiny (heaven) depends upon hearing "the word of truth and the gospel of our salvation."

Sound doctrine is very important. It is the gospel, a sacred trust, and we dare not tamper with God's communication to the world. Our duty is to deliver the message, not to change it. The Bible issues a strong warning neither to add to nor subtract from God's Word. Rather than alter the apostles' doctrine, we receive what has been passed down to us and keep it "as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus". What we believe affects what we do.

"Many false prophets have gone out into the world" There are tares among the wheat and wolves among the flock. The best way to distinguish truth from falsehood is to know what the truth is. Conversely, the result of unsound doctrine is destruction. There are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only sovereign Lord.

Changing God's message of grace is a "godless" thing to do, and the condemnation for such a deed is severe. Preaching another gospel ("which is really no gospel at all") carries anathema (one that is cursed by ecclesiastical authority) "let him be eternally condemned!"

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NKJV)
3. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
4. and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

Sound doctrine is very important because it encourages believers. And an evangelized, pastor and teacher must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage with sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. There will be People that will not endure sound doctrine but instead will be more interested in fables that tickle they ears.

As true followers of Jesus Christ we must adhere to three very important doctrines: 1. The Trinity. 2. Jesus death on the cross 3. Salvation. These doctrines have such importance that if an evangelized, pastor or teacher denies any of them then they are teaching an unsound doctrine.

2 Peter 2:1 (NKJV)
But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.

It's not simply a question of "if" we believe, but "what" we are to believe.
